Salazar<\/em>, soon to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3342120\/supreme-court-colorado-conversion-therapy-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> before the Supreme Court, is whether a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Colorado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colorado<\/a> law prohibiting &ldquo;conversion therapy&rdquo; for pediatric patients unconstitutionally restricts a counselor&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/first-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free speech rights<\/a>, via viewpoint discrimination, when that therapist wants to counsel children experiencing gender dysphoria toward embracing their biological sex.<\/p>\n<p>A number of traditionally progressive third parties are siding with the plaintiff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-539\/331462\/20241108125757340_USSC%20Petition%20for%20Writ%20of%20Certiorari.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kaley Chiles<\/a>, a licensed Christian counselor who nudges clients to &ldquo;live consistently with God&rsquo;s design.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Of note is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-539\/363103\/20250613121002475_24-539%20Amicus%20Brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an amicus brief<\/a> filed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/womensliberationfront.org\/news\/wolf-files-amicus-brief-urging-supreme-court-to-protect-youth-from-affirmation-only-therapy-a-rebranded-form-of-the-old-conversion-therapynbsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women&rsquo;s Liberation Front<\/a> (WoLF), a &ldquo;radical feminist&rdquo; organization whose membership is 40% lesbian and bisexual, in support of Chiles, though not from a religious standpoint.<\/p>\n<p>In the friend-of-the-court filing, WoLF raises concerns regarding the impact of restrictive counseling legislation, like the one in Colorado, on gender dysphoric gay youth. WoLF warns that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1891975\/keeping-our-children-safe-pennsylvania-governor-bans-conversion-therapy\/\">such<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2596441\/washington-state-bans-sexual-orientation-conversion-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laws<\/a> will effectively &ldquo;trans away the gay&rdquo; by banning exploratory talk therapy that examines the underlying causes of bodily discomfort, rather than indulging in ideations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3444173\/the-truth-about-ban-conversion-therapy-facing-supreme-court-scrutiny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>THE TRUTH ABOUT A BAN ON &lsquo;CONVERSION THERAPY&rsquo; FACING SUPREME COURT SCRUTINY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many gender-confused minors ushered along a path to medical mutilation wind up realizing post-transition that they were &ldquo;just a gay kid,&rdquo; WoLF says, yet left permanently disfigured with more mental distress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ourduty.group\/usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our Duty-USA,<\/a> which represents <a href=\"https:\/\/ourduty.group\/2025\/02\/16\/detransitioners-and-desisters-for-doubters-3d-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a group of detransitioners<\/a> who were groomed as children in therapeutic settings into assuming their transgender identities, then later on in life came out as gay, offered similar sentiments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-539\/363170\/20250613141524591_Our%20Duty%20Amicus%20Brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a separate submission<\/a> to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[T]he transgender movement targets children who would likely be same-sex attracted as adults, do not fit the regressive stereotypical roles for their sex, or have mental health issues,&rdquo; Our Duty-USA&rsquo;s amicus briefing argues.<\/p>\n<p>In one of several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-539\/363170\/20250613141610893_Certificate%20of%20Compliance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testimonials<\/a>, Our Duty-USA shared with the Supreme Court, a gay man named Ari lived as a girl for more than a decade due to childhood counselors affirming, without question, his self-declared gender identity because he felt too feminine to be male.<\/p>\n<p>And so, Ari underwent facial feminization surgery; a &ldquo;back alley&rdquo; orchiectomy, the surgical removal of one&rsquo;s testicles; and vaginoplasty, in which the penis is inverted to cosmetically create a pseudo-vagina. At each step, he had mental health providers blindly supporting his sex-change ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>According to Our Duty-USA, states with statutes outlawing conversion therapy require that mental health professionals operate under &ldquo;a gender-affirmative care model&rdquo; or risk loss of their license, fines, and disciplinary action. These laws compel an affirmation-only approach to treatment plans and impose a chilling effect on counselors otherwise willing to intervene, challenge, or outright attempt to disrupt a child&rsquo;s feelings of dysphoria, as opposed to fueling their gender confusion.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conversion-therapy-by-another-name\">Conversion therapy by another name<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/docket\/docketfiles\/html\/public\/24-539.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filing frenzy<\/a> from outside observers is diversifying the debate around what &ldquo;conversion therapy&rdquo; means today, compared to how the public has historically understood it to be.<\/p>\n<p>Employing the term evokes a horrid history of institutional abuse against gay people.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Colorado&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-539\/336594\/20250106113037565_Chiles%20SCOTUS%20BIO%20-%20FINAL%20PDFA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brief<\/a>, entered on behalf of Patty Salazar, executive director of the state&rsquo;s Department of Regulatory Agencies, cites past abusive practices, such as electroconvulsive-shock experiments, arousal reconditioning, nausea inducement, and other aversion tactics to conjure imagery of the sort of conversion therapy banned by the law.<\/p>\n<p>However, in this particular case, Chiles says she solely engages in talk therapy and ostensibly does not set out to &ldquo;cure&rdquo; or &ldquo;convert&rdquo; clients. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Psychotherapy, i.e., talk therapy, is a widely practiced discipline and considered by some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-539\/363225\/20250613181420320_Chiles%20-%20ACPeds%20Amicus%202025.06.13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">pediatric physicians to be<\/a>&nbsp;the best non-invasive method for alleviating early-onset gender dysphoria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A contingent of gay rights groups sees &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/instead-of-vetting-the-trans-industry-l-a-times-attacks-its-victims\/\" title=\"Instead Of Vetting The Trans Industry, L.A.Times Attacks Its Victims\">gender-affirming care&#038;rdquo<\/a>; as contemporary conversion therapy, coercing children to physically alter themselves into something they are not, instead of growing up gay.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Demonstrators against transgender rights protest during a rally outside of the Supreme Court, Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, in Washington, as arguments begin in a case regarding a Tennessee law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. (Graeme Jennings \/ Washington Examiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Gay adolescents are more likely than their straight peers to feel they don&rsquo;t fit in with their sex class,&rdquo; gay rights advocate and attorney Glenna Goldis told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;Gender-affirming therapists reinforce their alienation instead of helping them thrive as nature designed them&mdash;people who defy sex stereotypes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, in May, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/opa.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-05\/gender-dysphoria-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>, which concluded that childhood gender-nonconformity is &ldquo;strongly associated&rdquo; with homosexuality in adulthood, documented an overrepresentation of gay, lesbian, and bisexual adolescents among gender clinic patients who were prescribed irreversible procedures.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, gender medicine is the most effective form of anti-gay conversion therapy, Goldis said. Puberty blockers, which suppress hormonal production, prevent sexuality from developing in the first place. Penile-inversion surgery is <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/heterodorx\/status\/1909929534805193136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rumored<\/a> to render the tissue numb. Some homosexual women <a href=\"https:\/\/badfacts.substack.com\/p\/girls-on-steroids-in-the-2000s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that taking testosterone, an anabolic steroid, made them want to have sex with men, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e0RKh8rtCY4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perhaps<\/a> a byproduct of overall higher sex drives.<\/p>\n<p>WoLF says gender identity crisis is often rooted in societal expectations or &ldquo;internalized homophobia,&rdquo; a phenomenon of self-shame leading internally conflicted gays to seek to change their gender so that they appear &ldquo;straight.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For whatever reason, they do not feel it is okay to be gay,&rdquo; explained Elspeth Cypher, a retired Massachusetts Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/supreme-judicial-court-justice-elspeth-b-cypher-to-retire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">judge<\/a> serving as WoLF&rsquo;s counsel of record in the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Transition solves the fear of being gay because they will be attracted to the &lsquo;opposite sex,&rsquo;&rdquo; Cypher told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;They think this anyway. Often, they are not able to have sex or feel sexual feelings.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Gender ideologues, meanwhile, tend to misuse the term &ldquo;conversion therapy&rdquo; as a catch-all phrase in furtherance of the transgender cause.<\/p>\n<p>According to transgender activists, anything not gender-affirming constitutes conversion therapy. That includes policies not remotely related to therapy. As <a href=\"https:\/\/badfacts.substack.com\/p\/religious-counselor-asks-supreme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goldis points out<\/a>, this is evidenced in the previous writings of American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Chase Strangio, who argued on behalf of the transgender lobby in <em>United States v. Skrmetti<\/em>. Strangio asserted that barring biological boys from competing in female-only sports is state-sponsored conversion therapy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[I]f you tell a young person&hellip;they must exist in accordance with their assigned sex at birth, then you are instructing the state to engage in a process of coerced conversion therapy,&rdquo; Strangio said in <a href=\"https:\/\/chase-strangio.medium.com\/how-many-trans-kids-will-die-while-we-await-this-mythic-trans-sports-takeover-8a4ab53324da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2021 thinkpiece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lgb-rethinks-the-t\">LGB rethinks the T<\/h2>\n<p>The <em>Chiles<\/em> case shines a spotlight on a growing schism in the LGBT base between gender-critical gays and their transgender counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3451967\/why-the-transgender-movement-is-losing-traction-insiders-explain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>WHY THE TRANSGENDER MOVEMENT IS LOSING TRACTION, INSIDERS EXPLAIN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The statutory language in Colorado&rsquo;s conversion therapy law treats sexuality and gender identity as equally protected, parallel characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>As written, the state&rsquo;s Minor Conversion Therapy Law, introduced as <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019a_1129_signed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 19-1129<\/a>, broadly defines conversion therapy as any treatment &ldquo;that attempts or purports to change an individual&rsquo;s sexual orientation or gender identity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of gender ideology say grouping the two distinctly different terms together erodes decades of progress made by the gay rights movement.<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights protections hinge upon a protected class being &ldquo;born that way,&rdquo; Cypher explained. This shared characteristic must be immutable and inherent, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Gay equality activists fought for a long time to depathologize homosexuality, previously classified as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual up until 1973. The medical industry recognizing that gay people cannot be &ldquo;counseled&rdquo; out of their sexual orientation&mdash;and that sexuality is hard-wired&mdash;marked a monumental achievement.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is all put at risk when the two terms are conflated,&rdquo; Cypher said.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas gender identity, which can change on a whim, was recently introduced into the mainstream and arises from fringe queer theory.<\/p>\n<p>Cypher lamented that most of the public is not well-versed in this area and will group &ldquo;gay&rdquo; in with transgenderism.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, anything negatively precipitating from transgender activism &ldquo;splashes back&rdquo; on gay people, Cypher continued.
