The AstraZeneca vaccine hasn\u2019t been authorized for emergency use in the United States, meaning that the supply owned by the government has stayed idle even as other countries have begun to publicly administer it. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/wireStory\/tussle-us-allies-vaccine-supply-escalates-76416355\">ABC News<\/a>, the U.S. currently owns about 10 million AstraZeneca vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur first priority remains vaccinating the U.S. population,\u201d said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki during a press conference Thursday. She also remarked that \u201censuring our neighbors can contain the virus\u201d is \u201cmission-critical to ending the pandemic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Psaki, who noted other countries have requested AstraZeneca vaccines from the U.S., said the tentative plans involve \u201cassessing how we can loan doses\u201d to other countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat is our aim, it\u2019s not fully finalized yet, but that is our aim and what we\u2019re working toward \u2014 to Canada and Mexico. This is a complex process, and our team is working with the companies to move it forward,\u201d added Psaki.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While The Washington Post, citing senior officials in Mexico and the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/biden-mexico-immigration-coronavirus-vaccine\/2021\/03\/18\/a63a3426-8791-11eb-8a67-f314e5fcf88d_story.html\">reports<\/a> that the U.S. has already agreed to provide Mexico with vaccines, it\u2019s unclear whether the plans have actually been finalized or when such an exchange would take place. <span>Psaki said Thursday that a tentative vaccine arrangement with other countries could involve the U.S. receiving AstraZeneca doses at a later date, or possibly non-AstraZeneca doses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/verify\/verify-astrazeneca-vaccine-in-the-united-states\/65-4414a2af-05eb-4565-b870-426553efaa1b\"><span>WUSA9<\/span><\/a><span>, AstraZeneca is weeks away from having enough clinical trial data to submit an FDA emergency authorization application, which, once submitted, can lead to several more weeks of waiting before regulators determine whether to authorize it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Biden administration\u2019s announcement comes as a regulator in the European Union determined in a review that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe, despite scattered reports of blood clots that prompted some European countries to put a hold on inoculations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c[T]the benefits of the vaccine in combating the still widespread threat of COVID-19 (which itself results in clotting problems and may be fatal) continue to outweigh the risk of side effects,\u201d announced the European Medicines Agency late Thursday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c[T]he vaccine is not associated with an increase in the overall risk of blood clots (thromboembolic events) in those who receive it,\u201d they said. \u201c[T]here is no evidence of a problem related to specific batches of the vaccine or to particular manufacturing sites.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Latvia, Bulgaria, and Slovenia now plan to resume AstraZeneca inoculations in the coming days, according to the German news site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/astrazeneca-germany-other-european-countries-to-resume-use-of-vaccine\/a-56922088\">Deutsche Welle<\/a>. Various European officials have announced plans to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine themselves to boost confidence in its safety, including the French prime minister and the leadership of the Latvian government.<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday, prior to the EMA safety announcement, that he was still going to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine himself \u201cvery shortly,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/17\/covid-uk-pm-boris-johnson-says-he-will-get-oxford-astrazeneca-vaccine.html\">according<\/a> to NBC News.
