The verdict concludes a closely watched eight-week trial in New York. Combs was acquitted of the more serious racketeering and sex trafficking charges, which could have resulted in life imprisonment.

During the sentencing, both supporters and critics, including former girlfriends, submitted letters to the court. Singer cassie Ventura, whose civil suit helped trigger the inquiry, asked for a harsher sentence, describing her trauma.Prosecutors sought an 11-year sentence, citing Combs’s lack of remorse and the harm caused to victims. combs’s defence asked for a lighter sentence, arguing his legacy has been destroyed and he has already faced notable punishment. combs himself apologized in a letter, claiming he is a changed man.

Legal experts noted the judge considered behavior beyond the charges and viewed Combs as a danger to women, indicating a tougher sentence. While an appeal and possibly a presidential pardon remain options, former President Donald Trump has dismissed the possibility of granting a pardon due to their strained relationship.

Since his arrest in September 2024, Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, sharing the facility with other high-profile inmates. The defense’s biggest mistake was credibility. They tried to blame victims while also playing for sympathy, which is a strategy that almost never works with a judge. At sentencing, you have to pick a lane — either accept full responsibility and apologize without qualification, or preserve your appeal arguments. Diddy’s team tried to do both, and it backfired.

“Even though he was acquitted of the most serious charges, the judge clearly saw him as a danger to women.
