The Supreme Court has agreed to here a challenge to a Hawaii law that significantly limits where handgun owners can carry their weapons, marking an important Second Amendment case for the upcoming term. The case, *Wolford v.lopez*, concerns a state law that prohibits carrying a handgun on private property open<\/a> to the public without explicit permission from the property owner or manager, even if the person has a concealed carry permit<\/a>. The lawsuit, filed by Hawaiian gun owners and the Hawaii Firearms coalition in 2023, argues that this restriction violates the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n

The Court will focus specifically on whether the state can generally ban licensed concealed carry permit holders<\/a> from carrying handguns on privately owned public spaces without the property owner’s express authorization. The coalition contends that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling-that the Second Amendment does not extend to private property open to the public-effectively nullifies the right to carry in public.<\/p>\n

Hawaii defends the law, stating it aligns with the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in *New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v.Bruen* and argues the case is too premature for Supreme Court review. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this and several other significant cases during the 2025-26 term, which begins soon.
