Additionally, $18 billion in New York City infrastructure projects, such as the Hudson Tunnel Project and the Second Avenue Subway, have been paused.White House budget director Russell Vought cited opposition to what he described as unconstitutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles as the reason for the funding freeze.Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate minority Leader Chuck Schumer, condemned the moves, calling these projects critical for jobs, transportation, and the economy. The Department of Transportation noted that reviews of these projects are delayed due to the shutdown, which it blamed on Democratic obstruction. Vice President JD Vance defended the administrationS actions as necesary to prioritize essential government services during the shutdown, denying that blue states or federal workers are being specifically targeted. The article also recalls President Trump’s previous efforts during his first term to cut funding for the Gateway tunnel project in New York, a stance that conflicted with Democratic leaders and which was later reversed under President Biden.

Trump slashes funding for blue state projects as shutdown clash escalates

The Trump administration has targeted billions of dollars worth of federal funding allotted for blue state projects less than 24 hours after government funding lapsed, ratcheting up the pressure in a shutdown fight with Democrats on Capitol Hill.

White House budget director Russell Vought announced Wednesday that nearly $8 billion in energy funding in 16 Democratic-led states, including California and New York, was being cancelled, though he did not specify which programs would be affected.

Recommended Stories

Clinton and Harris slam Trump and GOP over government shutdown

White House teases ‘imminent’
