Hung Cao, the former Republican Senate candidate from Virginia who lost to Senator Tim Kaine in the 2023 election, has been confirmed by the Senate to serve as the undersecretary of the Navy, the second -highest civilian position<\/a> under Navy Secretary John Phelan. The confirmation vote passed mostly along party lines,52-45,with Cao receiving the support of most Republicans while Democrats,including Kaine,opposed him. Centrist Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski was the only GOP senator to vote against Cao, citing concerns after reviewing his background and qualifications.<\/p>\n

Cao is a retired Navy captain with 25 years of service and ran a Trump-backed campaign last year. During his campaign, he emphasized conservative policies, especially on immigration, and made bold statements about military recruitment. Although he previously ran unsuccessfully<\/a> for a House seat in 2022, his military and Pentagon experiance where highlighted as key qualifications for the new role. President Trump endorsed his nomination, expressing confidence in Cao’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
