During a recent White House briefing, Press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that officials would only be arrested if they commit a crime, signaling a retreat from earlier, more aggressive threats. The discussion included Evanston Mayor daniel Biss, who participated in an anti-ICE protest but denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>despite this softened rhetoric,the administration has continued to launch aggressive immigration enforcement campaigns,especially in sanctuary cities like Chicago and Washington,D.C., resulting in thousands of arrests of criminal illegal aliens, including gang members and terrorists. These crackdowns have triggered protests and rioting in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in Trump&#8217;s presidency, there were explicit threats to prosecute sanctuary city officials for obstructing federal immigration laws, including an executive order to defund sanctuary jurisdictions and warnings from Attorney General Pam bondi to local leaders. However,the Department of Justice has yet to clarify whether it will actively prosecute public officials for enforcing sanctuary policies.<\/p>\n<p>As federal enforcement intensifies nationwide, the absence of direct legal action against sanctuary lawmakers may embolden these officials to continue sanctuary policies, presenting a significant challenge for the administration&#8217;s efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/border-agent-bloodied-after-alleged-fight-with-migrant\/\" title=\"Border agent injured in altercation with migrant\">enforce immigration laws effectively<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Trump administration has signaled that proposals to arrest top lawmakers in sanctuary jurisdictions may now be on the back burner, seemingly walking back more aggressive prior statements on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The apparent walk back came during a White House briefing last week, when I specifically queried Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt about sanctuary-jurisdiction officials, including Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, a Democrat, who was reportedly seen participating in a violent anti-ICE protest in the sanctuary state of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>When I mentioned Biss and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Wid_Lyman\/status\/1970196931537146270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked<\/a> Leavitt if the administration has &ldquo;plans to start arresting sanctuary mayors or governors going forwards,&rdquo; she responded: &ldquo;Unless they commit a crime, I don&rsquo;t see them being arrested, but if they are violating federal law, if they are violating state law, then, of course, they should be arrested by state and local law enforcement.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Biss had reportedly joined a large group of agitators who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Julio_Rosas11\/status\/1969045861330985073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laid siege<\/a>&nbsp;to the ICE Broadview processing facility in the Chicago suburbs on Sept. 19. (Biss took issue with being named in the question, offering the following response on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DanielBiss\/status\/1970226544212877381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a>: &ldquo;Unidentified ICE agents are snatching neighbors off the street and intimidating peaceful protesters while right<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >-wing media spreads false narratives<\/a> and even suggests my arrest. Nonviolent protest is core to our democracy and I won&rsquo;t be silenced.&rdquo;)<\/p>\n<p>The exchange highlights the important issue of how the Trump administration will deal with public officials who implement sanctuary city policies that hinder and threaten to hamstring the administration&rsquo;s efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-blue-state-claw-back\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Blue ... C... Back\">enforce federal immigration law<\/a>. To its credit, Trump in his second term has aggressively tackled the border crisis that the Biden administration fomented. He has sent federal agents and troops to Democrat strongholds across the U.S. this year in an attempt to curb violence and rampant illegal alien activity.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered a <a href=\"https:\/\/borderhawk.news\/this-is-liberation-day-trump-preparing-to-steamroll-sanctuary-city-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significant federal&nbsp;intervention<\/a> in Washington, D.C., which netted <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dc-immigration-federal-intervention-543a6079974fda90f96bae17ae53729e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thousands of arrests<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/08\/19\/dhs-law-enforcement-arrests-gang-members-kidnappers-drug-traffickers-part-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MS-13<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/08\/28\/dhs-law-enforcement-arrests-gang-members-kidnappers-drug-traffickers-part-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tren de Aragua<\/a> terrorists, since mid-August. In September, the administration launched two additional campaigns &mdash; ICE-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/09\/08\/ice-launches-operation-midway-blitz-honor-katie-abraham-target-criminal-illegal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Operation Midway Blitz<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/operation-at-large-immigration-enforcement-chicago-gregory-bovino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Border Patrol-led Operation At Large<\/a> &mdash; aimed at arresting thousands more illegal aliens in Chicago and across Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>ICE has apprehended more than <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/reaganreese_\/status\/1968789963803132309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">210,000<\/a>&nbsp;illegals since Jan. 20, with the vast majority being criminal illegal aliens. The administration will reportedly increase federal activity in other cities as well.<\/p>\n<p>But these crackdowns in sanctuary jurisdictions have sparked significant protesting and rioting, as was seen in Los Angeles this summer. &ldquo;You will not stop us or slow us down.&rdquo; ICE &ldquo;will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,&rdquo; DHS Secretary Kristi Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Sec_Noem\/status\/1931456023493308787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>The administration has taken a hardline response to protests in sanctuary jurisdictions and has <a href=\"https:\/\/borderhawk.news\/exclusive-white-house-signals-no-plans-to-arrest-sanctuary-officials-unless-they-commit-a-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spoken openly<\/a> about taking legal action against lawmakers who resist, obstruct, or interfere in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-to-nominate-texas-sheriff-to-lead-ice\/\" title=\"Biden to Nominate Texas Sheriff to Lead ...\">federal immigration enforcement<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But during the first days of the Trump presidency, the administration indicated that sanctuary city officials were engaging in illegal activity simply by virtue of enforcing sanctuary city policies. When Leavitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8xpyOSJaxkA&amp;t=1044s&amp;themeRefresh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was asked<\/a> if these officials were violating the law on Jan. 31, she replied: &ldquo;If they are not enforcing our nation&rsquo;s immigration law, sounds like they are breaking the law.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Also in January, Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller indicated sanctuary authorities could be arrested if they flouted federal immigration laws. &ldquo;The law is clear that harboring an illegal alien, smuggling an illegal alien, obstructing law enforcement, obstructing an official proceeding and a conspiracy to violate the rights of Americans, all of these and many more are criminal statutes,&rdquo; Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/mayors-local-officials-could-face-arrest-dont-comply-trumps-immigration-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told Fox News<\/a>. &ldquo;So if there [are] incidences that occur where a public official or an elected individual engages in violations of those criminal statutes, then I fully expect the Department of Justice will follow the letter of the law.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In April, President Trump signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/04\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-protects-american-communities-from-criminal-aliens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order<\/a> threatening to defund sanctuary jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Why not just arrest the leaders who are harboring and shielding illegal aliens &mdash; actually, terrorists &mdash; from deportation?&rdquo; Border czar Tom Homan was asked after the order was issued. A smiling Homan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nicksortor\/status\/1918039382511980549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">replied<\/a>, &ldquo;Wait until you see what&rsquo;s coming.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In July, President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1940091630041645248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said <\/a>he would arrest Zohran Mamdani if the prospective New York City mayor didn&rsquo;t allow federal officials to arrest illegal aliens in the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In August, Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aila.org\/ag-sends-letters-to-leadership-of-sanctuary-jurisdictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent letters<\/a>&nbsp;to dozens of leaders of sanctuary cities, counties, and states across the country, warning that their leaders could be prosecuted and federal funds stripped if they refused to cooperate with President Trump&rsquo;s plans. &ldquo;You better be abiding by our federal policies and with our federal law enforcement, because if you aren&rsquo;t, we&rsquo;re going to come after you,&rdquo; Bondi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6376926352112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told Fox News<\/a> after the letters were issued.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice did not respond to a request for comment on whether the Trump administration will seek to prosecute public officials for enforcing sanctuary city policies.<\/p>\n<p>As federal operations continue across the country, enforcement is ramped up, and more ICE, Border Patrol, and Homeland Security Investigations agents are trained and sent into the field, the number of apprehensions and deportations will rise even higher.
