A report from New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli indicates that more cities,towns,and villages in New York are experiencing financial stress in 2024 compared to the previous year. Specifically,23 local governments were designated as fiscally stressed in the fiscal year ending<\/a> in July 2024,up from 14 in 2023. This increase comes as federal pandemic relief funds<\/a> are winding down,and upcoming federal funding cuts are expected to create additional budget pressures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some municipalities, including Little Falls, Cambridge, Island Park, and Saugerties, were classified in the highest fiscal stress category (“meaningful stress”).Others,like Albany,Poughkeepsie,Massena,Yates,and several villages,were in the “moderate fiscal stress” category. The report also notes a rise in towns considered “susceptible” to financial stress.<\/p>\n

Comptroller DiNapoli advises local governments to remain vigilant and prudent in their financial planning amid volatility in revenue sources and uncertainty in federal support. He also stresses the importance of timely financial reporting to maintain transparency, accountability, and public confidence.
