Tom Cotton (R-AK) said that the ceremonies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1371809866122199040\"><span>mark<\/span><\/a><span> \u201csegregation,\u201d which is \u201cthe endpoint of critical race theory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other leading universities in the United States are likewise experimenting with racial segregation. Here are five examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NYU \u2014 Segregated Housing<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>New York University introduced \u201cthemed engagement communities\u201d to provide a home for students identifying with certain minority groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the school\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/students\/student-information-and-resources\/housing-and-dining\/on-campus-living\/the-on-campus-experience\/special-interest-housing.html\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span>, the \u201cBlack Violets\u201d floor in Brittany Hall \u201cserves to uplift Black-identifying students by creating a safe-space within residence halls in order to foster a stronger Black community at NYU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cResidents committed to celebrating the diverse facets of Black culture through curated social and cultural programming are welcome to apply,\u201d continued the description. \u201cWhile this floor\u2019s intent is to shine a light on the fruits of the Black diaspora, it will also explore the very real everyday implications of being Black in America with a spotlight on maintaining wellness while being socially aware.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Like Columbia University\u2019s graduation ceremonies, the school offers residential programming for low-income and Latin American students. The school also includes multiple living experiences oriented around social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>New York University\u2019s student newspaper defended the program in response to articles from The Federalist and The Post Millennial. The editorial board <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/?ID=15701\"><span>argued<\/span><\/a><span> that black students need distinct housing since \u201cwhite people have never experienced anything close to systemic racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere is a difference between a privileged group oppressing another group of people by excluding them from spaces due to race and a marginalized community asking for a space where they can find support,\u201d said the article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>New York University\u2019s racial equity goals are strikingly different from the dreams of activists in generations past. Indeed, the Fair Housing Act of 1968 \u2014 a hallmark achievement of the civil rights movement \u2014 was once celebrated for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/fair-housing-act\"><span>prohibiting<\/span><\/a><span> discrimination in the United States housing market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>New York University <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/nyu-2785\"><span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> thirtieth among national universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Penn \u2014 Permanent Space for Black Student-Athletes and \u2018Allies\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Among a variety of diversity program recommendations from the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s \u201cRacial Justice Task Force,\u201d wa<\/span><span>s a space set apart for black athletes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The school\u2019s athletic department plans to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spark.adobe.com\/page\/a5ckAehTWdww0\/\"><span>establish<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cpermanent shared space for Black student-athletes,\u201d which will also be accessible to \u201callies and non-athletes.\u201d The university will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16544\"><span>open<\/span><\/a><span> the space during the \u201clate night and early morning with swipe access\u201d and incorporate work-study opportunities \u201cfunded by the Black Student-Athlete Fund.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Penn Athletics \u2014 which officially adopted the task force\u2019s suggestions in December \u2014 clarified that the suggestions were \u201ccreated as a beginning, not a conclusion\u201d to the school\u2019s racial equity work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Months earlier, the university hired a \u201cVice President for Social Equity &amp; Community\u201d to serve alongside the \u201cChief Diversity Officer.\u201d However, the task force also recommended that the school hire a \u201cChief Diversity &amp; Inclusion Officer\u201d for the athletics department \u2014 a move that represents Penn\u2019s third diversity czar hire despite COVID-induced budget strains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The University of Pennsylvania \u2014 which, like Columbia, is a member of the Ivy League \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/university-of-pennsylvania-3378\"><span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> eighth among American universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Yale \u2014 Queer \u2018QBIPOC\u2019 Town Hall<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Yale University\u2019s Office of LGBTQ Resources offered a \u201cQueer BIPOC Town Hall Meeting\u201d in October.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDo you identify as LGBTQ and BIPOC?\u201d read the event\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtq.yale.edu\/event\/queer-bipoc-town-hall-meeting-10-28-20\"><span>description<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIf so, this event is for you, a virtual town hall to build community with one another. The purpose of this meeting is to share your perspectives, experiences, challenges, and concerns. We hope to form a mission and regular gathering place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The school excluded individuals who do not identify with the targeted intersectional group: \u201cTo ensure privacy and safety, we respectfully ask that this space be reserved for those who self-identify as QBIPOC.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yale, another member of the Ivy League, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/yale-university-1426\"><span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> fourth among American universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cornell <\/b><b>\u2014<\/b><b> \u2018BIPOC\u2019 Rock Climbing<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Cornell University planned a physical education course entitled \u201cBIPOC Rock Climbing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Racial activists on college campuses brought the acronym \u201cBIPOC\u201d into the mainstream as a descriptor for \u201cBlack, Indigenous, and People of Color.\u201d Dictionary.com recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dictionarycom\/status\/1370094676649373702\"><span>added<\/span><\/a><span> the term to its lexicon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cornell\u2019s course catalog stated that it would restrict the class to \u201cpeople who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other people of color.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCourses ensure a high degree of individual attention and a supportive space to explore the vertical world!\u201d said the class <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201202163126\/https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/coe\/pe-courses\/spring-pe-courses\/rock-climbing\/BIPOC-rock-climbing\"><span>description<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe will also talk about BIPOC individuals and groups in rock climbing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After a correspondent from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16847\"><span>Campus Reform<\/span><\/a><span> reached out to Cornell\u2019s media relations department, the school backtracked by modifying the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/coe\/pe-courses\/spring-pe-courses\/rock-climbing\/BIPOC-rock-climbing\"><span>description<\/span><\/a><span> to emphasize that \u201cthe class is open to all Cornell students interested in learning rock climbing\u201d with a special focus on BIPOC individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The original course appeared to violate a principle outlined on the New York State Attorney General\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/civil-rights\/equal-educational-opportunity\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span>: \u201cStudents in New York schools are protected by federal, state, and local laws that prevent discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and other categories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite backlash for its rock climbing class, Cornell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16955\"><span>offered<\/span><\/a><span> additional segregated courses. The Women\u2019s Resource Center advertised \u201cYoga for BIPOC Folx\u201d, \u201cYoga for QTPOC Folx\u201d, and \u201cYoga for Women + Femme Folx\u201d for \u201ccommunities of color and LGBTQ+ folx\u201d at the university.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cornell, also an Ivy League school, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/cornell-university-2711\"><span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> eighteenth among American universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stanford \u2014 Minority Physics Classes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>To achieve more diversity among physics majors, Stanford University offered classes with \u201cadded support\u201d for minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lauren Tompkins \u2014 an assistant physics professor and member of the school\u2019s Equity and Inclusion Committee \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/2019\/08\/14\/making-physics-inclusive\/\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201cyour identity affects your experience as a physicist and even the physics that you do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf we can acknowledge and understand that, it makes us better physicists,\u201d she claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Accordingly, the school created a mechanics class specifically for minority students who \u201cdon\u2019t have the same level of preparation from high school as their majority peers.\u201d The school stated that \u201cthe difference in preparation is large enough that it may lead students to drop out of the major but small enough that the kind of support offered by this course can be enough to keep them in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another course \u2014 \u201cDiverse Perspectives in Physics\u201d \u2014 brought minority physics faculty members as guest speakers to \u201cshare the story of their lives and careers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stanford <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/stanford-university-1305\"><span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> sixth among American universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
