The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline dropped to $3.148, continuing a trend of steady and relatively affordable fuel costs throughout 2025.Prices have decreased slightly compared to last week, last month, and even last year, although the difference from a year ago has recently narrowed.

Most of the country, excluding the West Coast, enjoys gas prices around or below $3 per gallon. This summer’s prices were the lowest since 2021, avoiding the typical seasonal increase. As of now, about half of the states have average gas prices under $3 per gallon, with Oklahoma currently having the cheapest gas at $2.65 per gallon.

Conversely,West Coast states face considerably higher gas prices, with California topping the list at $4.65 per gallon, followed closely by Washington and Hawaii. the article highlights the continued affordability of gasoline across much of the U.S.,despite regional disparities.

Gas prices: Falling costs at the pumps heading into Autumn

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped to $3.148 on Friday. Today’s price point is less expensive than a month ago, when regular gas was $3.186 per gallon, according to AAA. During the summer, gas prices have fluctuated between $3.13 and $3.20 per gallon, according to AAA. This summer’s gas prices were the lowest for a summer season since 2021, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. However, as mentioned above, the affordable fuel costs have been the trend for most of 2025. Fuel costs avoided the traditional summer-time surge this year, and except for a swing of a few cents per gallon here and there, as mentioned above, gas prices have been steady.

For example, on Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day, the national average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.186. At the end of July, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.14, and at the beginning of July, gas was $3.171 per gallon. At the beginning of June, slightly after Memorial Day and the traditional start of the summer driving season, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.141. On the last day of April, a gallon of regular gas averaged $3.182 per gallon throughout the nation.

Most gas price experts suggest a $3-per-gallon price point as a reasonable cost in today’s market when analyzing the affordability of nationwide gas prices. About a week ago, there were 20 states with average gas prices lower than $3 per gallon, the same as during the last week of August. Today, nearly half the country has gas prices under $3 per gallon, with 24 states achieving the price threshold, according to AAA.

TRUMP TO TARGET ‘RADICAL-LEFT’ GROUPS FUNDING VIOLENCE THAT LED TO CHARLIE KIRK’S DEATH

Oklahoma currently has the cheapest gas prices in the nation at $2.652 per gallon, surpassing Mississippi for that honor. Tennessee is the fifth cheapest state in the country for gas prices at $2.742 per gallon.

High gas prices continue to plague the West Coast. California remains the state with the most expensive gas prices in the country at $4.646, nearly $1.50 higher than the national average. Next is the state of Washington, with an average price of $4.569 per gallon for regular gas.
