In a letter to Rep. Jim Jordan, Alphabet pledged to reinstate some terminated accounts tied to outdated policies but maintained that it values conservative voices despite a history of censoring or suspending them.<\/p>\n<p>The letter acknowledged mistakes in relying heavily on health authorities during the pandemic, which sometimes came at the expense of open debate. However, the company offered no compensation for the damages inevitably wrought on the voices they suppressed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement of facts <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2025-09-23-letter-to-hjc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> from company counsel Daniel F. Donovan to Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Alphabet and YouTube (collectively &ldquo;the company&rdquo;) committed to reinstating users whose accounts were terminated from YouTube for supposedly violating &ldquo;COVID-19 and election integrity policies that are no longer in effect.&rdquo; The company also claimed YouTube, which is owned by Google, &ldquo;values conservative voices,&rdquo; despite its deeply stained record of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/06\/19\/exclusive-man-tried-to-share-his-regrets-about-transgender-life-youtube-censored-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">censoring<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/08\/02\/sky-news-australia-suspended-for-violating-youtubes-ever-changing-covid-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspending<\/a>, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/13\/youtube-slaps-dehumanizing-pro-abortion-context-onto-pro-life-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contextualizing<\/a>,&rdquo; and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/02\/10\/google-owned-youtube-deplatforms-pro-life-group-lifesitenews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kicking<\/a>&nbsp;such conservative voices off the platform.<\/p>\n<p>The letter did not offer any plans for compensation for individuals who were deplatformed or demonetized under YouTube&rsquo;s former content policies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The letter discussed changes to Covid-19 policies over time on the YouTube platform, and admitted that, though &ldquo;reliance on health authorities in this context was well-intentioned, the Company recognizes that it should never come at the expense of public debate on these important issues.&rdquo; (Notably, during the pandemic, the platform <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/10\/21\/youtube-nukes-video-of-gop-lawmakers-discussing-constitutional-limits-to-covid-vaxx-mandates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suppressed<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/01\/google-owned-youtube-threatens-to-ban-users-who-question-mask-effectiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatened<\/a> viewpoints challenging prominent narratives on masks, vaccines, and public health figures like <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/29\/youtube-censors-song-exposing-fauci-as-a-sad-little-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Anthony Fauci<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>The letter also claims that senior Biden administration officials &ldquo;conducted repeated and sustained outreach to Alphabet and pressed the Company regarding certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/google-admits-to-censoring-americans-at-the-behest-of-the-biden-admin-vows-to-make-amends\/\" title=\"Google Admits to ... Americans at the Behest of the Biden Admin, Vows to Make Amends\">user-generated content related<\/a> to the COVID-19 pandemic that did not violate its policies&rdquo; and pressured &ldquo;the Company to remove non-violative user-generated content.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The letter adds that administration officials, &ldquo;including President Biden, created a political atmosphere that sought to influence the actions of platforms based on their concerns regarding misinformation,&rdquo; actions Alphabet and YouTube suggest are &ldquo;unacceptable and wrong.&rdquo; The company indicated that it &ldquo;consistently fought against those efforts on First Amendment grounds,&rdquo; despite <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/19\/google-is-now-censoring-american-journalists-on-behalf-of-communist-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">countless<\/a> contemporary examples of YouTube censoring critics of the Biden regime, such as lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/10\/21\/youtube-nukes-video-of-gop-lawmakers-discussing-constitutional-limits-to-covid-vaxx-mandates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discussing<\/a> constitutional limits to Covid vaccine mandates, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/24\/youtube-purged-cpac-livestreams-for-discussing-big-techs-2020-election-meddling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">livestream<\/a> footage showcasing how Big Tech meddled in the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to seemingly hiding behind the Biden administration and health officials to distract from its censorship, the company also blamed global restrictions put in place by the European Union for &ldquo;plac[ing] a disproportionate regulatory burden on American companies.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/jordan.house.gov\/media\/in-the-news\/heavy-hitting-congressmen-tell-us-they-are-shocked-eu-speech-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> from Rep. Jordan and others explained that under the EU&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/europe-fit-digital-age\/digital-services-act_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Services Act <\/a>(DSA), &ldquo;European regulators push companies &ndash; including American tech companies &ndash; to change their terms of service and target political speech,&rdquo; even attempting to quell political content on the American platform X because European users could be exposed to it.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, Alphabet and YouTube claimed they have &ldquo;long expressed concern about the risk the DSA may pose to freedom of expression.&rdquo; However, tech companies are also ultimately responsible for the policies they implement. Similar to how the Biden administration worked with Big Tech to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-minority-leader-mccarthy-defends-free-speech-from-democrat-censorship\/\" title=\"House Minority Leader McCarthy defends free speech from Democrat ...\">censor conservative voices<\/a>, the European Union gives online platforms <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/07\/11\/this-newly-implemented-online-speech-code-just-gave-european-censors-another-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tools<\/a> to censor users via the DSA. The letter from YouTube and Alphabet admits as much, noting that &ldquo;The DSA may open avenues for substantive speech regulation of lawful speech, including through risk mitigation [and] the use of codes of conduct and crisis protocols.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist&rsquo;s CEO Sean Davis pointed out, Alphabet and Google&rsquo;s apparent attempts to deflect are not enough. Finger-pointing at the government and hiding behind the &ldquo;unprecedented&rdquo; nature of Covid,<strong> <\/strong>vague &ldquo;commitments&rdquo; to free expression, or &ldquo;evolving&rdquo; company policies, <strong> <\/strong>do not right the wrongs of silencing American voices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Google owes us all damages for what their censorship cost us,&rdquo; Davis wrote on X in response to the statement of facts letter. &ldquo;A quick &lsquo;we&rsquo;re sorry&rsquo; now that they&rsquo;re in trouble isn&rsquo;t going to cut.
