Cody was already in rough shape.<\/p>\n<p>He had sustained deep cuts and severe head trauma with brain bleeds and skull fractures, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/missouri-teen-dakota-cody-trenkle-jr-goes-home-after-falling-into-ravine-spending-month-in-hospital-exclusive-11804014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> People. He developed <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/teen-woke-up-after-11-days-in-coma-and-used-sign-language-tell-mom-important-message-exclusive-11790655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pneumonia<\/a> and infections from the water he&rsquo;d been lying in since the crash.<\/p>\n<p>He was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital and spent two weeks in a medically induced coma.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A teen had been missing for 3 days and needed a miracle - a dog came to the rescue\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xXzd_LiauWk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>His mom, Stephanie Neely, told People a &ldquo;pivotal&rdquo; moment in Cody&rsquo;s recovery was when he woke up from the coma in mid-August and used sign language to tell her, &ldquo;I love you.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>That small but meaningful gesture &ldquo;made the last couple weeks of stress, heartache, hope, gratitude, sadness, and pain worth it because that small gesture meant my boy was coming back to me,&rdquo; she told People at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Cody still faces a long road to recovery, given his brain trauma and other injuries. But he has made such good progress that he was able to start school again last week.<\/p>\n<p>His first day back &ldquo;was all right,&rdquo; Cody said. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t get to do the things I wanted to. I couldn&rsquo;t go through the hall with all the people because of safety precautions with my head.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>One highlight of his day was having a reunion with K9 Daryl.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Thank you,&rdquo; he told the four-legged hero. &ldquo;Thanks, Bubbas.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I got to meet the dog that saved my life,&rdquo; Cody told KSDK.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If I&rsquo;d had to spend a couple more hours down there, I wouldn&rsquo;t have made it.
