New York Times Opinion Columnist and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/19\/david-french-yes-the-dispatch-takes-money-to-help-leftists-keep-the-internet-conservatism-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">former Facebook censorship partner <\/a>David French, in particular, took the news that at least two media groups dropped <em>Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em> and ABC indefinitely suspended it over the host&rsquo;s on-air treatment of the Kirk tragedy hard.<\/p>\n<p>As Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BulwarkOnline\/status\/1968392506711613526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/09\/17\/jimmy-kimmel-blatantly-broke-fcc-rules-and-brendan-carr-was-right-to-notice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blatantly violated FCC rules<\/a> when he falsely asserted, against all evidence, that Kirk&rsquo;s alleged assassin was <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bennyjohnson\/status\/1968476012871925903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;MAGA.&rdquo;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The legitimate reason for pulling Kimmel&rsquo;s TV spot, however, hasn&rsquo;t stopped the left or French from lamenting private companies&rsquo; protected decisions to drop the talk show as &ldquo;yet another direct attack on free speech.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>It&rsquo;s important to note that Kimmel, in addition to mocking <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/14\/why-jimmy-kimmels-jokes-about-christian-super-bowl-ads-are-weak-and-ignorant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christians<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/02\/20\/not-mentally-ill-gun-owning-christian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conservatives<\/a>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/05\/08\/jimmy-kimmel-deceptively-edits-video-of-mike-pence-claims-he-delivered-empty-boxes-to-a-nursing-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a routine offender<\/a> of the FCC&rsquo;s prohibition on falsities and potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/01\/if-trump-wins-he-should-arrest-and-prosecute-jimmy-kimmel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other federal statutes<\/a>. This behavior has undoubtedly put his show at risk of removal for years, but no one has been bold enough to follow through until now.<\/p>\n<p>Enforcing regulations already on the books is, of course, well within the purview of the FCC and Carr. In fact, it should be expected &mdash; especially by the same people who spent the last four years yelling <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/17\/democrats-say-no-one-is-above-the-law-but-this-list-of-their-corrupt-allies-proves-otherwise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;no one is above the law.&rdquo;<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Yet, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/18\/opinion\/trump-vance-bondi-douglassfree-speech.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times column<\/a> published less than 24 hours after news of Kimmel&rsquo;s downfall broke, French accused the Trump administration of &ldquo;making matters worse&rdquo; by &ldquo;using Kirk&rsquo;s death as a pretext to threaten a sweeping crackdown on President Trump&rsquo;s political and cultural opponents.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>French also claimed that Kimmel&rsquo;s comments, which put even more Christians and conservatives at risk of harm from leftists, had simply &ldquo;gotten something wrong on his late-night TV show.&rdquo; Kimmel&rsquo;s history of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/05\/08\/jimmy-kimmel-deceptively-edits-video-of-mike-pence-claims-he-delivered-empty-boxes-to-a-nursing-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lying and deceitfulness designed<\/a> to make conservatives look bad, however, suggests otherwise. <\/p>\n<p>That same day, French promoted his column in a post suggesting that the &ldquo;free speech&rdquo; implications of cutting Kimmel were of the same magnitude as the brutal murder of Kirk.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve never seen a comprehensive attack on free speech like this in our lifetimes. The assassin&rsquo;s attack on Charlie Kirk was also an attack on free speech. [The] administration&rsquo;s crackdown on speech is egregious. And more people support political violence. It&rsquo;s all so bad,&rdquo; French <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidAFrench\/status\/1968684570435322004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote on X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the end of Kimmel&rsquo;s show is truly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-rep-murphy-house-republicans-introduce-resolution-to-protect-free-speech-academic-freedoms\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Murphy, House Republicans Introduce Resolution To Protect ..., Academic Freedoms\">free speech violation<\/a>, there would be an onslaught of lawsuits demanding his First Amendment rights be honored. Instead, all the left has is an article from Politico claiming that the Supreme Court&rsquo;s approach to the Biden administration&rsquo;s attempt to silence its political enemies via Big Tech means Kimmel has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/09\/18\/jimmy-kimmel-supreme-court-first-amendment-lawsuit-00570697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;precedent on his side&rdquo;<\/a> and French&rsquo;s X feed. <\/p>\n<p>For years, conservatives have endured <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/09\/18\/6-times-leftists-melting-down-over-jimmy-kimmel-were-happy-to-deny-conservatives-free-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aggressive attempts<\/a> to cancel their advertisers and shows, kick them off of Big Tech platforms, and silence their online discussions about important topics such as Covid-19. If French et. al. actually cared about free speech, they would have adamantly opposed all such efforts and done everything in their power to stop them. Instead, people like French <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/19\/david-french-yes-the-dispatch-takes-money-to-help-leftists-keep-the-internet-conservatism-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joined in the muzzling<\/a> and cheered the censorship as right and necessary. <\/p>\n<p>In a clear &ldquo;rules for thee, but not for me&rdquo; or mine fashion, French and so many others whining over Kimmel only believe <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sunnyright\/status\/1968702368159068215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;the government clearly has an interest in correcting misinformation&rdquo;<\/a> if the content in question offends the left&rsquo;s preferred narrative. <\/p>\n<p>This was especially apparent when French called Twitter&rsquo;s deplatforming of the sitting American president an &ldquo;actual exercise of liberty.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>It&rsquo;s also why he (<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/09\/18\/6-times-leftists-melting-down-over-jimmy-kimmel-were-happy-to-deny-conservatives-free-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">along with so many others<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/roseanne-barr-fired-show-canceled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cheered<\/a> when ABC canceled <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidAFrench\/status\/1001523761747816450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;toxic&rdquo;<\/a> Roseanne Barr&rsquo;s show in 2018 over a tweet (aka free speech), but fretted when <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WeAreSinclair\/status\/1968447366710604275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sinclair<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bennyjohnson\/status\/1968441333103616188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nexstar<\/a> ceased broadcasting Kimmel over his on-air lies. <\/p>\n<div>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The contrast in how French treated the last four years of First Amendment infringements and the indefinite suspension of Kimmel proves he never cared about real free speech.
