During the event, Starmer avoided directly addressing questions about his upcoming decision to recognize a Palestinian state later this month. He emphasized the urgent need for peace, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and rapid humanitarian aid access to Gaza. Starmer reiterated his stance that Hamas is a terrorist association opposed to peace and a two-state solution, and clarified that Palestinian state recognition aims to foster a safe and secure israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.

Trump openly disagreed with Starmer’s position on Palestinian statehood but shared Starmer’s concern about the hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, calling for their immediate release and an end to the violence. Both leaders expressed mutual respect despite their differing views. The article also notes that Starmer’s announcement about Palestinian state recognition was made in July, with france expected to follow suit at the United Nations General Assembly. trump concluded his three-day UK visit following the press conference.

Starmer sidesteps Palestinian statehood questions during press conference with Trump

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer danced around questions regarding his decision to recognize a Palestinian state later this month during a joint press conference with President Donald Trump in Chequers, the prime minister’s country house.

“We absolutely agree on the need for peace and a road map because the situation in Gaza is intolerable,” Starmer told reporters on Thursday. “The hostages have been held for a very, very long time, and they must be freed.
