The U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills concerning crime and judicial nominations<\/a> in Washington, D.C., aiming to increase President Donald Trump’s authority over local matters. The District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Reform Act, introduced by Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX),would remove the D.C. Judicial Nomination Commission and grant the president sole power to nominate local judges. The District of Columbia Policing Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), would permit the Metropolitan Police Department to pursue fleeing suspects in vehicles by repealing restrictions set by the D.C. Council in 2022.<\/p>\n

The first bill passed along party lines (218-211), while the second received some bipartisan support (245-182). House Oversight Chairman James Comer defended the bills, arguing current rules limit<\/a> the president’s authority. however, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), the District’s nonvoting delegate, criticized the legislation as undermining D.C. home rule and called on Congress to reject it.<\/p>\n

These bills followed other recent legislation targeting D.C. crime, such as lowering the age for trying juveniles as adults in certain specific cases. The legislative push comes amid Trump’s prior federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and deployment of the National Guard to address crime in the capital. Despite a recent decline in violent crime rates, concerns remain about local public safety<\/a> and police openness, prompting further congressional oversight and investigations into police practices.
