A New York state judge has dismissed the state terrorism charges<\/a> against Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Judge Gregory Carro dropped the first-degree murder as an act of terrorism and second-degree terrorism-related murder charges, reducing Mangione’s potential state prison sentence from 25 years to life to 15 years to life. However, the second-degree murder charge remains, and Mangione still faces separate federal charges that coudl result in the death penalty.<\/p>\n

mangione, heir to a wealthy Italian family, reportedly shot Thompson on a Manhattan street in December using a 3D-printed pistol and silencer. He evaded capture for five days before being arrested in Pennsylvania with the murder weapon and a manifesto expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and wealthy executives.<\/p>\n

His defense attorneys have argued that the state charges violate the constitutional double jeopardy clause<\/a><\/a>. The case has encountered complications, including federal prosecutors admitting they listened to private conversations between Mangione and his lawyers, violating his Sixth Amendment right to counsel-a development that could jeopardize the federal case. The top federal prosecutor for Manhattan recused himself following this disclosure.<\/p>\n

The trial is ongoing, with mangione appearing in court in Manhattan after five months.
