The Utah Supreme court has upheld a lower court ruling that requires the state legislature to redraw its congressional map by September 25. this decision denies the legislature’s attempt to maintain the current map for the 2026 midterm elections, ruling that the existing districts, created by the Republican-controlled legislature, are unconstitutional and violate redistricting reforms approved by voters. In 2018, Utah voters passed proposition 4<\/a>, mandating an independent redistricting commission<\/a> to create fair maps without partisan bias. However, legislators repealed this in 2020 and enacted a map that splits Salt Lake County-a Democratic stronghold-into four districts, effectively diluting Democratic votes.The new court order requires the legislature to draft a new map, allow for public comment, and adopt it by a special session on October 6, with Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson emphasizing that the new map must be finalized by November 10 to prepare for the upcoming elections.
