Petro’s softer approach to cocaine production has coincided with a sharp increase in coca cultivation, prompting the U.S. to place blame on his administration for not meeting drug control obligations.

colombia remains the world’s largest exporter of cocaine, responsible for 90% of the cocaine sold in the U.S.annually. The U.S. has used the rare and serious step of decertification, which can disrupt bilateral relations and aid, as a response to these developments. although aid was not cut off, the designation is expected to have negative consequences.

Self-reliant reports show that cocaine cultivation in Colombia has risen steadily since 2013, with significant percentage increases in recent years. President Petro criticizes the U.S., blaming American society for the drug problem rather than Colombia’s policies. He has proposed addressing the drug issue through social programs rather than aggressive law enforcement and has controversially compared cocaine to whiskey in terms of harm.

the article highlights growing tensions between the U.S. and Colombia regarding drug policy, with U.S. officials condemning Colombia’s political leadership and Colombia pushing back on U.S. criticisms amid rising cocaine production.

US adds Colombia to list of nations failing to cooperate in drug war for first time in decades

The Trump administration added Colombia to a list of countries failing to cooperate in the war on drugs for the first time in nearly 30 years.

The designation reflects the deteriorating relations between the United States and one of its closest Latin American allies. Trump’s vision has repeatedly clashed with that of the left-wing president, Gustavo Petro, whose soft-handed approach to cocaine production has failed to stop the skyrocketing of cocaine cultivation.
