California Governor Gavin Newsom is considering whether to sign several bills recently approved by the state legislature, decisions that could have significant political ramifications as he contemplates a 2028 presidential run. Among the key bills is California Senate Bill 53, which targets artificial intelligence by requiring clarity reports from developers of advanced AI models like openai’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The bill aims to mandate safety frameworks to mitigate “catastrophic risks” – events causing more than 50 casualties or over $1 billion in damages.Though, major tech companies<\/a> and trade groups oppose the legislation, fearing it could hinder innovation and arguing for a unified federal approach rather.<\/p>\n

Another contentious bill, Assembly Bill 1264, seeks to ban ultra-processed foods in public schools to improve public health.
