The U.S. House of Representatives passed a Republican bill, supported by former President Donald Trump, that increases penalties for illegal border crossers, especially repeat offenders. The legislation, known as House Rule 3486 or the Stop Illegal Entry Act, allows for harsher punishments, including up to 10 years in prison for second-time border crossers. Illegal immigrants convicted of state or federal felonies but not deported would face a minimum five-year sentence, while those previously deported who committed felonies could receive sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment. The bill, fast-tracked by Republican leadership, was introduced by Representatives Brad Knott and stephanie Bice and now moves to the Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the law as a strong enforcement measure to deter illegal immigration and uphold law and order at the border.
