The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a bipartisan amendment to repeal the 1991 adn 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) related to Iraq.The bill, approved by a vote of 231 to 196, aims to restrict presidential authority<\/a> to conduct military actions<\/a> without Congressional approval. This legislation,with a funding level of $892.6 billion, included nearly two dozen amendments on various issues, such as limiting gender transition procedures<\/a> in military healthcare and prohibiting related treatments under military insurance programs.<\/p>\n

The repeal of the AUMFs was the most debated amendment, passing 261 to 167, marking a important shift from previous leadership opposition.These AUMFs have historically been used by presidents, including Donald Trump, to justify military actions such as the targeted killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.<\/p>\n

Some Republican-backed amendments, including cuts to aid for Ukraine and Taiwan, were defeated. The bill now moves to the Senate, where a version with a higher budget cap of $925 billion awaits final approval after clearing procedural obstacles.
