Leading Democrats in Washington, D.C. are strongly opposing a series of proposed federal bills aimed at increasing control over the District’s criminal justice system<\/a>.These bills, under the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Again” initiative led by House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, seek to override local criminal justice reforms, centralize authority over the police and courts, and change the D.C. attorney general position<\/a> from an elected to a presidentially appointed role. The legislative push coincides with the impending expiration of former President Trump’s 30-day crime emergency order, which temporarily federalized D.C.’s law enforcement.<\/p>\n
