Former Meta researchers Jason sattizahn and cayce Savage testified about the sexual predation and harm children face in Meta&#8217;s VR environments. They claimed that meta knowingly allows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/apple-promotes-hookup-apps-to-children-report-finds\/\" title=\"Apple Promotes Hookup Apps to Children, Report Finds\">underage users<\/a> on these platforms but avoids acknowledging this to evade compliance with the Children&#8217;s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA), which woudl require removing underage users. Savage described how VR&#8217;s immersive nature amplifies the emotional impact of harm, as users deeply identify with their avatars. Senators raised concerns that Meta altered or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/inside-the-corrupt-world-of-alzheimers-science-and-what-its-failure-means-for-all-settled-science\/\" title=\"Inside The Corrupt World Of Alzheimer\u2019s Science (And What Its Failure Means For All \u2018Settled Science\u2019)\">suppressed research<\/a> data about emotional and sexual harm to protect its business interests. While Meta denies these allegations, the hearing adds to ongoing scrutiny over the company&#8217;s safety practices toward minors, especially regarding VR and AI chatbots. Lawmakers expressed bipartisan frustration and support for stronger legislation,such as the Kids Online Safety Act,aimed at holding platforms accountable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/absolument-musk-answers-macrons-plea-will-the-bird-protect-our-children\/\" title=\"\u2018Absolument\u2019: Musk Answers Macron\u2019s Plea: \u2018Will The Bird Protect Our Children?\u2019\">protecting children online<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A Senate committee held a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kMAG-ahtpWw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing <\/a>Tuesday on claims that Meta lawyers obscured research findings related to child safety on virtual reality (VR) platforms. The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/2025\/09\/08\/meta-research-child-safety-virtual-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that four whistleblowers submitted a &ldquo;trove of documents&rdquo; to Congress in May, who alleged in their statement that &ldquo;Meta&rsquo;s legal team was trying to establish plausible deniability.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Jason Sattizahn and Cayce Savage, both former Meta researchers, testified to sexual predation and harm faced by children using Meta&rsquo;s VR products.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I wish I could tell you the number of children in VR experiencing these harms, but Meta would not allow me to conduct this research,&rdquo; Savage said. She noted personally observing these situations when using VR, and the stories of parents and teens that she was able to collect in other research. She later added she would &ldquo;estimate that any child that is in a social space in VR will come in contact with or directly expose something very inappropriate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Savage and Sattizahn claimed throughout the hearing that Meta is fully aware that kids use their VR technology, but would go to great lengths to obscure that.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Meta is aware that its VR platform is full of underage children. Meta purposely turns a blind eye to this knowledge despite it being obvious to anyone using their product,&rdquo; Savage said. She acknowledged that because underage users on the platform are so common, the only way Mark Zuckerberg could be unaware is &ldquo;if he had never used his own headset.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If Meta were to acknowledge the presence of underage users, they would be required to kick off those users from their platform in order to remain COPPA-compliant,&rdquo; Savage explained, referencing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/legal-library\/browse\/rules\/childrens-online-privacy-protection-rule-coppa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Children&rsquo;s Online Privacy Protection Rule<\/a> that sets data privacy requirements for children younger than 13. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t happening because it would decrease the number of active users Meta is reporting to shareholders. At Meta, engagement is the priority above everything else.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Senators asked Sattizahn and Savage about the nature of the harm to children.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What happens in virtual reality is reality,&rdquo; Savage explained. She described the social space of VR, where unknown users can &ldquo;corner,&rdquo; &ldquo;surround,&rdquo; and &ldquo;touch&rdquo; other users. VR obscures the user&rsquo;s hearing and vision, tracks his physical motion, and surrounds his senses. She explained that users forge a deep connection to their &ldquo;avatar&rdquo; that represents them in the technology: &ldquo;if something is happening to your avatar, it feels like it&rsquo;s happening to you.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In his questioning, Sen. Hawley, R-Mo., posited that &ldquo;Meta changes research to not gather data on emotional and sexual harm, once it became aware that it was rampant,&rdquo; and that &ldquo;Meta changes data to obscure harm &hellip; to users&rdquo; based on the testimony. Sattizahn confirmed these statements were correct.<\/p>\n<p>Although The Post&nbsp;reported&nbsp;that Meta &ldquo;has vehemently denied&rdquo; the whistleblowers&rsquo; claim that the company&nbsp;&ldquo;suppressed research,&rdquo;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>the hearing comes in a years-long string of accusations that Meta endangers underage users on its platforms, particularly with VR and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/meta-ai-chatbot-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> AI chatbots<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/10\/05\/1043377310\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leak<\/a> of Meta studies led to congressional hearings in 2021, and caused Meta&rsquo;s legal team to &ldquo;edit and sometimes veto internal research about youth safety in VR,&rdquo; according to reporting by the Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Meta is incapable of change without being forced by Congress,&rdquo; Sattizahn said. Senators issued an invitation to Meta during the hearing to return and testify to refute the claims made by Sattizahn and Savage.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Blackburn, R-Tenn., spoke to what she called &ldquo;bipartisan anger&rdquo; toward tech platforms &ldquo;intentionally, knowingly harming our children.&rdquo; Throughout the hearing, senators repeatedly advocated for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/2073\/all-actions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kids Online Safety Act<\/a>, sponsored by Blackburn.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is abundantly clear to me that it is time to allow parents and victims to sue this company,&rdquo; Hawley said, &ldquo;we need to open the courtroom doors and allow victims to have their day in court.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Catherine Gripp is a graduate of Arizona Christian University where she earned a degree in communication and a minor in political science.
