A federal judge ruled<\/a> that a Virginia school board violated the First Amendment by restoring the name of Stonewall Jackson High School, a name associated with Confederate officers. U.S. District judge Michael F. Urbanski held that students cannot be compelled to bear a name that conveys a pro-slavery message, as it forces them to symbolically endorse those views. The decision came from a lawsuit filed by the NAACP virginia State Conference and students, who argued that restoring Confederate names created a discriminatory surroundings and violated constitutional and civil rights laws<\/a>. While the judge ruled specifically on the First Amendment issue regarding the high school’s name, other claims in the lawsuit will be addressed in a future trial. The controversy follows the school board’s 2020 decision to replace Confederate names,which they reversed in 2024 despite community opposition.
