This decision invalidates Adams’ Executive order 50, which had aimed to expand cooperation with ICE despite New york City’s sanctuary policies.

Judge Mary Rosado declared the order “null and void,” citing an impermissible conflict of interest, amid allegations that Adams had made a questionable deal with the Trump administration to dismiss a corruption case against him in exchange for ICE access. Adams denies wrongdoing, asserting that the case dismissal was politically motivated and unrelated to ICE cooperation. even though Adams delegated the issue to his deputy, Randy Mastro, the judge found this insufficient to remove the conflict of interest.

The New York City council praised the ruling, viewing it as a defense of sanctuary protections and civil rights. They also criticize Adams’ cooperation with ICE, claiming it undermines community safety and due process. The mayor’s office plans to appeal the decision, maintaining that the executive order complies with local law and denies any actual conflict of interest.

New York court strikes down Adams plan to bring ICE into Rikers

The New York Supreme Court on Monday handed down a ruling barring Immigration and Customs Enforcement from reopening an office at Rikers Island.

The decision marks a blow to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who had attempted to sideline the Big Apple’s sanctuary policies by backing executive orders in February and April granting ICE access to the prison island, which holds the largest correctional facility in the state.

Recommended Stories

Patel says FBI has been investigating Charlotte train stabbing ‘from day one’

Minneapolis City Council ready to litigate against property owner who won’t clear homeless encampment

Trump pins blame for murder of Iryna Zarutska on soft crime policies

However, Judge Mary Rosado, who had temporarily blocked the mayor from allowing ICE to operate at the facility again earlier this year, declared Adams’s Executive Order 50 “null and void,”
