The proposed federal funding bill<\/a> for fiscal year 2026 includes nearly $16 million allocated for zero-emission transportation initiatives, specifically electric and hydrogen buses, and also charging infrastructure across the United States. This funding is part of the House’s Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, one of the 12 annual appropriations bills<\/a> for federal agencies.<\/p>\n

California is set to receive the largest portion, with various projects supported by several Democratic representatives, involving battery systems for solar energy storage, zero-emission bus programs, and hydrogen bus pilots. Specific allocations support transit agencies and community services in cities like Culver City, South Gate, and Sacramento, and institutions such as UCLA.<\/p>\n

Othre states receiving funds include Ohio, Massachusetts, and Washington, designated for similar zero-emission transportation upgrades.<\/p>\n

The Department of Transportation and the Department of Housing and Urban Development would oversee distribution of these funds, pending the bill’s approval by Congress. As of now, only two appropriations bills have passed the House, and a smaller “minibus” appropriations package has passed the Senate. Congress faces a deadline of September 30 to pass all appropriations bills to avoid a government shutdown.
