The Orange County District Attorney&#8217;s office announced that Yourex faces charges including perjury, submitting false documents, casting ballots without entitlement, and registering a fictitious voter. The dog&#8217;s vote was counted in the 2021 recall election but rejected in 2022 after the ballot was challenged. The investigation began after a resident self-reported the fraudulent voter registration. Evidence included social media posts by Yourex showing the dog with &#8220;I voted&#8221; stickers and ballots. Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2021\/09\/27\/governor-newsom-signs-landmark-elections-legislation-making-vote-by-mail-ballots-permanent-for-every-registered-voter-strengthening-elections-integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed<\/a> Assembly Bill 37, making universal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/madness-court-rules-undated-mail-ballots-legitimate-point-even-cutoff-date\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mail-in<\/a> voting permanent and requiring counties to automatically mail ballots to all active, registered voters.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/orangecountyda.org\/press\/costa-mesa-woman-charged-with-five-felonies-for-illegally-registering-her-dog-to-vote-casting-mail-in-ballots-sent-to-dog-in-two-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a> from the Orange County District Attorney&rsquo;s Office, 62-year-old Laura Lee Yourex of Costa Mesa has been charged with one felony count of perjury, one felony count of procuring or offering a false or forged document to be filed, two felony counts of casting a ballot when not entitled to vote, and one felony count of registering a non-existent person to vote.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, the DA&rsquo;s office was contacted by the Orange County Registrar of Voters&rsquo; Office after a resident allegedly self-reported that she registered her dog to vote. The resident claimed that she cast a mail-in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-announces-plan-voter-executive-order-no-exceptions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ballot<\/a> addressed to her dog, Maya, for the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary election.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The dog&rsquo;s vote was successfully counted in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election but was rejected in the 2022 primary,&rdquo; \t\t\t\t}); \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/ocvote.gov\/apps\/legtracker\/elections-code\/contents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Elections Code<\/a>, in order to register to vote in the state, a voter would need to fill out and submit an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/elections\/voting-resources\/voting-california\/registering-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Affidavit of Registration<\/a>, which includes the voter&rsquo;s name, residence, mailing address, date of birth, political party preference, and a certification that the voter is a citizen of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>With proof of residence not required when dropping off or casting a ballot during an election, it is required when first registering.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a result, the 2022 primary ballot cast in Maya Jean&rsquo;s name was challenged and rejected,&rdquo; sticker and posing with her ballot.&rdquo; An additional photo was allegedly posted on Yourex&rsquo;s social media in October 2024, showing her dog&rsquo;s tag and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/missing-mail-ballots-spark-voter-anger-crucial-pennsylvania-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vote-by-mail<\/a> ballot with the caption, &ldquo;maya is still getting her ballot,&rdquo;
