The Eaton Fire, which began in January 2025, burned over 14,000 acres, primarily in the Angeles National Forest, destroyed 9,418 structures, and caused 17 deaths. The DOJ alleges that faulty SCE equipment ignited the fire, leading to extensive environmental damage and costly fire suppression and rehabilitation efforts. Separately, the DOJ is suing SCE for $37 million over the Fairview Fire in san Bernardino county, which broke out in September 2022, burned nearly 14,000 acres, destroyed 44 structures, and caused two deaths and multiple injuries. This fire was allegedly caused by SCE’s sagging power line contacting a communication cable. Southern California Edison has acknowledged detecting faults in its transmission lines around the start of the Eaton Fire and has initiated a Wildfire Recovery Compensation programme to assist affected individuals. The lawsuits represent an effort to hold SCE accountable for its role in causing these devastating fires and to push for a cultural shift in the company toward greater responsibility and safety.

Feds sue Southern California Edison over Eaton, Fairview fires

(The Center Square) – The U.S. Department of Justice is suing electric utility company Southern California Edison for tens of millions of dollars over the devastating Eaton and Fairview fires, which torched national forests.

“The lawsuits filed today allege a troubling pattern of negligence resulting in death, destruction, and tens of millions of federal taxpayer dollars spent to clean up one utility company’s mistakes,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli in a statement Thursday. “We hope that <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/judge-rules-ca-gov-overstepped-his-authority-with-covid-order-issues-permanent-injunction-restraining-newsom-from-further-issuing-unconstitutional-orders/" title="Judge Rules CA Gov Overstepped His Authority with Covid Order, Issues Permanent Injunction Restraining Newsom From Further Is... The DOJ said that’s where the fire appears to have started.

The department’s lawsuit noted Southern California Edison admitted it detected a fault on one of its transmission lines around the time the fire began. The DOJ said sparks were ignited when the company’s sagging power line came into contact with a Frontier communications messenger cable.

The Fairview Fire burned nearly 14,000 acres within the San Bernardino National Forest and destroyed an outlook used for fire detection in remote areas, according to the DOJ.

The fire burned 44 structures, killed two people and injured another three individuals, two of whom were firefighters, the DOJ said.

WILDFIRES BURN THOUSANDS OF ACRES IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

In other fire-related news, TCU September Lightning Complex, which consists of 22 lightning-caused fires of various sizes in Calaveras, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties, burned 13,966 acres and destroyed 85 structures as of Friday morning.
