According to a recent Gallup poll, only 54 percent of americans report drinking alcohol, down from over 60 percent between 1997 and 2023. This marks one of the rare times sence Gallup began polling in 1939 that alcohol consumption fell below 60 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Experts suggest increasing awareness about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-k-to-pay-individuals-and-families-who-suffered-covid-vax-side-effects\/\" title=\"U.K. To Pay Individuals and Families Who Suffered COVID Vax Side Effects\">negative health impacts<\/a> of alcohol might potentially be driving this trend. Opt for the real deal for better ...\">recent research indicating<\/a> that any level of alcohol consumption may negatively affect health,&rdquo; Gallup noted.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This has been a sharp reversal from previous recommendations that moderate drinking could offer some protective benefits.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Americans now say that &ldquo;one or two drinks a day&rdquo; is bad for one&rsquo;s health, the first time such a finding has occurred in the Gallup poll.<\/p>\n<p>Only 6 percent say alcohol is good for one&rsquo;s health.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Consistent with the decline in young adults&rsquo; already lower use of alcohol over the past decade, this age group has also been the most likely to believe drinking is bad for one&rsquo;s health,&rdquo; Gallup noted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/l\/amandathomason\/cops--photo-little-boy-selling-ice-cold-beer-receiving-multiple-phone-calls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beer<\/a> remains the most popular libation in the United States, with 38 percent of respondents identifying it as their drink of choice.<\/p>\n<p>Men are more likely than women to choose beer, while women are more likely to choose wine, and both sexes are equally likely to enjoy liquor.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond health concerns, some have pointed to a persistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/every-young-man-needs-hear-message-jd-vance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loneliness<\/a> epidemic as a possible reason for lower alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm Purinton, an assistant teaching professor of history at Northeastern University who has studied the history of beer, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2025\/08\/18\/why-people-are-drinking-less-alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that the impact of COVID may have reduced interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-alcohol-deadly-5-years-kill-many-covid-just-1\/?ff_source=Push\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alcohol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;&#8203;&#8203;In high school, generally people will start experimenting with alcohol, usually in a social atmosphere,&rdquo; Purinton described.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You didn&rsquo;t have that social component. What you did have is you had [them] witnessing people drinking more, your parents and people of age drinking a whole lot more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Purinton noted that shifts between generations in terms of drinking habits, and which drinks they prefer, are often reactions to their parents&rsquo; drinking habits.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Craft beer was a big thing because people were like, &lsquo;I&rsquo;m not going to drink the Budweiser because that&rsquo;s what my parents drank.
