The Texas Republican Party has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to end the state’s open primary system<\/a>, arguing that it violates free speech rights<\/a> and allows for unconstitutional crossover voting. Under the open primary system, any registered voter can participate in either party’s primary, nonetheless of affiliation. The Texas GOP wants to switch to a closed primary system<\/a>, where onyl registered Republicans can vote in Republican primaries, to prevent what they allege is undue influence from Democrats and independents.
