Additional polls, including one from Emerson College, similarly show Vance with strong momentum, and he recently won the CPAC straw poll, positioning him as a likely successor to Trump. Only 21 percent said the same of Newsom.<\/p>\n<p>On the negative side, 45 percent said they viewed Vance unfavorably, but that still leaves him with a slight net positive.<\/p>\n<p>For Newsom, 25 percent of voters said they had never even heard of him. Another 24 percent held a very unfavorable view of him.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/democrats-flip-key-seat-iowa-special-election-sending-2026-warning-shot-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democrats<\/a> tested did not fare much better.<\/p>\n<p>Former Vice President Kamala Harris had 49 percent favorability, with 46 percent viewing her negatively.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota&rsquo;s Democratic Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-normally-clean-cut-scott-jennings-calls-complete-piece-tim-walz-live-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Walz<\/a> stood at 43 percent positive and 37 percent negative. Twenty percent had never heard of him.<\/p>\n<p>Pete Buttigieg had 39 percent positive and 32 percent negative. Thirty percent said they had never heard of him.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/latest-polls-2028-presidential-race-bad-news-dems-great-news-trump-admin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh Shapiro<\/a> was viewed positively by 39 percent, negatively by 25 percent, and 36 percent said they were unfamiliar with him.<\/p>\n<p>The poll also tested Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;America First&rdquo; economic policies.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-six percent of voters backed his economic vision, including 41 percent of Democrats and 36 percent of Harris voters.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty percent favored requiring foreign companies to manufacture in the U.S., and with American partners.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three-quarters also supported tougher rules on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hegseth-bars-chinese-nationals-sensitive-dod-projects-espionage-fears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese<\/a> firms operating in America.<\/p>\n<p>The poll of 1,000 likely voters was conducted August 8-10.<\/p>\n<p>Vance&rsquo;s momentum is not limited to just one survey.<\/p>\n<p>An Emerson College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-poll-pits-jd-vance-3-top-democrats-hypothetical-2028-match-ups-sweep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> in July also showed him <a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/july-2025-national-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beating<\/a> Newsom, Buttigieg, and Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/aoc-gop-rep-tim-burchett-fist-bump-introduce-restore-trust-congress-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> , a New York Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>He later handily won the CPAC straw poll, further cementing his place as Trump&rsquo;s likely heir.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Most likely, in all fairness.
