A federal judge<\/a> has ended the long-standing federal oversight of the Seattle Police Department, more than a decade after the city entered into a consent decree with the Department of Justice (DOJ). The decree, initiated in 2012 following findings of excessive force and discriminatory practices by Seattle police, aimed to reform the department’s policies and accountability measures. As then, Seattle implemented new use-of-force rules, enhanced officer accountability, and adopted body cameras. U.S. District Judge James Robart declared that the Seattle Police Department has fully complied with the agreement and is now considered a “model for reform.” Seattle’s Mayor Bruce Harrell highlighted the notable reduction in unreasonable use-of-force incidents, dropping from 20% in 2012 to under 1% today. The original DOJ inquiry was prompted by a 2010 shooting of an indigenous man, which was ruled unjustified. This growth aligns with a broader trend of the DOJ under recent administrations ending similar federal oversight in various U.S. cities.
