A Chicago Democrat, Alderman Raymond Lopez, is breaking with his party by supporting president Donald Trump’s offer to deploy the National Guard to Chicago to combat violent crime. Lopez cited residents’ fears about safety-expressing concern over frequent incidents like robberies, carjackings, adn shootings-and criticized city and state leaders for downplaying the severity of the problem. He pointed out that despite officials like Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson denying an emergency, violence remains high, including dozens of shootings and murders over recent weekends. Lopez urged for the federal deployment<\/a> to assist local police in targeting gang members, drug dealers, and traffickers. He also mocked Mayor Johnson’s attribution of crime to gun trafficking from Republican-led states and disagreed with Trump’s label of Chicago as the “murder capital of the world,” while acknowledging the real fear among residents.
