A streetcar derailed in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring about 18.<\/p>\n

Several were seriously injured in the Portuguese capital, known for its streetcars, which are a prime tourist attraction.<\/p>\n

The accident is the worst in the city’s recent history. It’s unclear how many foreigners or Americans were injured.<\/p>\n
The wrecked streetcar is colored yellow and white and was named the Elevador da Gloria. It operates up and down a steep downtown hill in the city and is classified as a national monument.<\/p>\n
Witnesses say the streetcar went down the hill without control and ended up on its side. The sides and top of the car were damaged, and the car appeared to have crashed into a building where the road bends. Several parts of the metal vehicle were crushed.<\/p>\n

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered his condolences to the families, and the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, said the city was mourning the accident.<\/p>\n
“It’s a tragedy of the like we’ve never seen,” Moedas said. “It’s a tragedy of the like we’ve never seen,” Moedas said.<\/p>\n
Portugal’s government announced that a day of national mourning would be observed on Thursday. “A tragic accident … caused the irreparable loss of human life, which left in mourning their families and dismayed the whole country,” it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
It’s unclear what caused the crash during the evening rush hour. Emergency officials said victims were pulled from the wreckage in just over two hours. The government said an investigation into the incident would happen after the recovery operation is finished.<\/p>\n
Several world leaders mourned<\/a> the accident, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “It is with sadness that I learned of the derailment of the famous Elevador da Gloria,” she wrote in Portuguese on X.<\/p>\n

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on X that he was “appalled by the terrible accident.”<\/p>\n
