requiring that they buy two seats and seek a refund for the second fare at the end of their trip, according to a Monday report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/airline-news\/2025\/08\/22\/southwest-new-plus-size-passenger-policy\/85776512007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there are new rules for the more rotund flyers who want the refund, according to the Southwest <a href=\"https:\/\/support.southwest.com\/helpcenter\/s\/article\/extra-seat-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The flight must leave with at least one open seat, both seats must be purchased in the same fare class, and the refund must be submitted within 90 days of the travel date.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Customers who encroach upon the neighboring seat(s) should proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional, adjacent seat is available,&rdquo; he told USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I just hope that consumers are aware of this change, and I wonder if plus size people will skip out on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/southwest-airlines-cuts-2000-workers-loses-200m-labor-costs-soar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flying<\/a> with them at all because of them not knowing if the flight is sold out or not,&rdquo; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Chubby Diaries is meant to inspire &ldquo;plus size travelers who are passionate&rdquo; about travel, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Chubbydiariestravel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Vaughn, a travel agent who s theme park reviews for plus-size individuals, meanwhile, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/southwest-plus-size-seating-rule-change-addbdb8264ce4d4b6598772540c5719f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> that the change will probably alter the experience for all Southwest customers, and not just their &ldquo;customers of size.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s going to make the flying experience worse for everybody,&rdquo; he asserted.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They have no idea anymore who their customer is,&rdquo; Vaughn continued. &ldquo;They have no identity left.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Kaycee Bivens, yet another travel enthusiast who works with plus-size customers, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/22\/travel\/southwest-extra-seat-plus-size-travelers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> that she was likewise disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have been exclusively flying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/southwest-boeing-737-unexpectedly-dives-toward-neighborhood-scares-residents-terrifying-scene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southwest<\/a> because of their customer size policy,&rdquo;
