The California Supreme Court denied a republican emergency petition seeking<\/a> to remove a congressional redistricting measure<\/a> from the November 4 ballot. The GOP argued that only an autonomous citizen commission, not legislators, can legally draw redistricting maps under the California Constitution and claimed the Democrats violated constitutional requirements by rapidly advancing the redistricting proposal with insufficient public notice. The rejected petition named several Republican state legislators as petitioners and was filed against Secretary of State Shirley Weber and the Legislature. This recent court decision<\/a> follows a prior ruling rejecting Republicans’ attempt to block the Legislature’s immediate action on redistricting legislation known as the Election Rigging Response Act, which puts Proposition 50 on the ballot. Proposition 50 proposes changes that would override parts of the Citizens Redistricting Commission’s work and create a map adding five Democratic House seats, a move backed by Governor Gavin Newsom and Democrats in response to similar Republican gains in Texas.
