The Tennessee public Charter School Commission has approved a pioneering charter school called “The Rock Academy” aimed at serving at-risk youth, especially students who are chronically absent or involved in the foster care system<\/a>. The school will initially enroll 88 ninth graders and offers a tailored academic plan with supports addressing the social-emotional needs of its students, including a later start time. This decision overturned a previous rejection by metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, whose officials had expressed concerns about funding and facility limitations for career and physical education spaces.<\/p>\n

Conversely, the commission rejected an request for another proposed charter school, The Forge School, which planned to serve middle and high school students specializing in careers in architecture, construction, and engineering. Despite community support highlighting the school’s potential to meet labor market demands and align with Tennessee’s education priorities, commissioners cited financial uncertainties and concerns about the school’s readiness as reasons for the 5-3 vote against approval.
