Honey has <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >extensive experience analyzing election administration<\/a> to identify vulnerabilities and has been involved in lawsuits to improve election laws in multiple states. She also served as the lead investigator for Trump&#8217;s legal team preparing for the January 6 trial.<\/p>\n<p>Her appointment has sparked strong criticism from left-wing figures, especially Democrat operative Marc Elias and his platform Democracy Docket, which published an article accusing Honey of promoting conspiracy theories and attacking her reputation. The article contained several inaccuracies, which were later corrected, including false claims about Honey&#8217;s use of a voter roll management app (IV3) and her role in efforts to withdraw states from the Electronic Registration information center (ERIC), an organization criticized by Honey&#8217;s supporters for inefficiency and left-leaning bias.<\/p>\n<p>Honey&#8217;s approach focuses on identifying potential weaknesses in election systems without claiming definite fraud, aiming to enhance election security through policy improvements. she previously led the Election Research institute, filed lawsuits challenging policies perceived to favor Democrats, and co-founded organizations dedicated to election research and voter education, such as Verity vote and the PA Fair Elections Coalition. These efforts include educating voters and election officials to foster better understanding and confidence in election processes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite left-wing opposition labeling her as an &#8220;election conspiracy theorist,&#8221; Honey is recognized for her expertise in election systems and her commitment to identifying and addressing potential election vulnerabilities to protect the integrity of the electoral process.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Election systems expert Heather Honey has been sworn in at the Department of Homeland Security (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/office-strategy-policy-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DHS<\/a>) as a deputy assistant secretary, leading elections integrity for the Trump Administration, and the left is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/leading-election-conspiracy-theorist-appointed-to-dhs-leadership-position\/?utm_content=344850022&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;hss_channel=tw-841489249157468161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">losing its mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Honey, a long-time open-source investigator, has spent years analyzing every aspect of how elections are administered, looking for vulnerabilities that leave election systems open to exploitation. Her investigations have led to lawsuits aimed at changing or clarifying election laws in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Georgia, Maine, and Tennessee, where she helped rewrite election legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Honey was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paleadershipconference.org\/speakers-bios\/115-heather-honey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lead investigator<\/a> on President Trump&rsquo;s criminal defense team supporting his Jan. 6 trial preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat operative Marc Elias, possibly the king of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/19\/bob-casey-files-more-ridiculous-lawsuits-in-search-of-additional-votes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election lawfare<\/a>, is so threatened by Honey&rsquo;s new position that he has launched into hyperdrive attacking her on his far-left page, Democracy Docket, where one of his writers, Matt Cohen, has published an inaccurate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/leading-election-conspiracy-theorist-appointed-to-dhs-leadership-position\/?utm_content=344850022&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;hss_channel=tw-841489249157468161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hit piece<\/a> smearing Honey.<\/p>\n<p>The piece claims Honey &ldquo;played a key role in the right-wing effort, much of it driven by conspiracy theories, to pressure states to withdraw from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) &mdash; a nonpartisan organization that helps to coordinate accurate voter registration data between states across the country.&rdquo; &nbsp;Wow. So many errors in just one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>ERIC is a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/21\/georgia-utah-move-closer-to-ditching-leftist-linked-voter-roll-maintenance-group-eric\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hard left<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/12\/virginia-to-exit-leftist-controlled-voter-roll-maintenance-group-eric\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organization<\/a> that is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/20\/report-eric-deemed-168000-dead-or-relocated-virginians-eligible-but-unregistered-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildly ineffective<\/a> at cleaning the voter rolls, (which should be done by state or local election administrators anyway) and that assessment is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/31\/if-erics-voter-roll-maintenance-is-so-popular-why-do-democrats-feel-a-need-to-force-states-to-join\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">real data<\/a>, not conspiracy theories. <\/p>\n<p>Cohen also originally claimed Honey used a &ldquo;right-wing app&rdquo; called &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/truethevote.org\/iv3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IV3<\/a>&rdquo; to clean voter rolls, and he connected the app to the Election Integrity Network. But IV3 is a True the Vote product and neither Honey nor the Election Integrity Network is affiliated with that group or app, confirmed Cleta Mitchell, an attorney and the founder of the Election Integrity Network. A day after the hit piece was published, at Mitchell&rsquo;s request, Democracy Docket added a correction for this portion of the still error-riddled piece.<\/p>\n<p>Elias went to social media this week to cast a shadow on Honey&rsquo;s reputation, calling her an &ldquo;election conspiracy theorist.&rdquo; And the word in election circles is that a few more hit pieces are planned from other leftist groups who don&rsquo;t want anyone to tinker with the election rules that have been quietly established by leftist bureaucrats in Washington over the years. For example, seemingly small decisions about what information belongs on the Federal Post Card <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fvap.gov\/uploads\/FVAP\/Forms\/fpca.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Application<\/a> could have profound effects on elections.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SCOOP: Heather Honey, an election conspiracy theorist tied to Cleta Mitchell, was appointed to a new &ldquo;election integrity&rdquo; position at DHS. His online bio boasts of winning more than 60 lawsuits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">against GOP<\/a> election integrity efforts. Few people understand the nuances of election systems as well as Elias. But Honey does. She will be able to spot and articulate election policies that should be changed to make the elections more secure. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before taking the DHS position, Honey has been working as the Executive Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electionresearchinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Election Research Institute<\/a>, where she filed the first lawsuit challenging former President Joe Biden&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/executive-order-14019-promoting-access-voting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order<\/a> that required federal agencies to engage in voter registration drives that favored Democrat voters and was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/22\/time-is-running-out-for-congress-and-states-to-defuse-bidens-election-takeover-bomb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded by<\/a> taxpayers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Honey co-founded <a href=\"https:\/\/verityvote.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Verity Vote<\/a>, an election research firm; and was a co-founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pafairelections.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PA Fair Elections Coalition<\/a>, which has helped educate voters and election administrators on how elections work so they better understand the process. And PA Fair Elections led a 2024 effort to get voters interested in filling Pennsylvania&rsquo;s many empty <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/28\/more-than-80-percent-of-pa-precincts-have-no-primary-candidates-for-vital-election-official-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elected election official<\/a> positions. Upon discovering that poll watchers don&rsquo;t necessarily all understand election rules, PA Fair Elections wrote a detailed booklet called the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.restoreconfidence.org\/resources-for-county-boards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elections Officials Handbook<\/a><\/em>. It covers most aspects of voting, such as registration; reconciliation and certification of election results; pre-canvassing absentee and mail-in ballot, provisional voting and more.<\/p>\n<p>PA Fair Elections is a state partner of the Election Integrity Network.<\/p>\n<p>Another of the many errors in Cohen&rsquo;s Democracy Docket piece claims, &ldquo;Honey has been involved in&nbsp;efforts&nbsp;to cast doubt on the 2020 election results. She has a long&nbsp;history&nbsp;of starting and promoting election conspiracies throughout Pennsylvania.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>But Honey&rsquo;s practice is not to call an election rigged or allege that fraud was committed. Instead, she looks for anomalies and election system weaknesses that could have many explanations, such as an innocent mistake by an election clerk or full-on cheating. Searching for these vulnerabilities and seeking ways to prevent them in the future is an important step in election integrity. Anyone who tries to undermine this sort of work, through hit pieces, social media posts, or lawsuits, is working against secure elections.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Beth Brelje is an elections correspondent for The Federalist.
