Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees have issued a warning to Congress expressing concerns that the agency, under the Trump management, is unprepared to handle another large-scale disaster<\/a> similar to Hurricane katrina. In a letter called the “Katrina Declaration,” signed by over 100 employees, they opposed President Trump’s plan to considerably downsize FEMA and shift more disaster response responsibilities to individual states. The letter, released shortly before the 20th anniversary of Katrina, criticizes the administration’s disregard for climate science and its impact on disaster management, highlighting that FEMA leadership lacks experience in emergency management. Since Trump took office, over 2,000 FEMA employees, roughly one-third of its permanent workforce, have left the agency.The letter warns that current policies risk repeating the failures seen during Katrina, which resulted in nearly 1,833 deaths and massive property damage, and calls for Congress to ensure FEMA remains adequately prepared to protect all American communities.
