The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has redirected nearly $45 million previously spent on union-related costs toward improving care for veterans. This move follows the VAS cancellation of most union contracts earlier in the month, aligning with President Donald Trump’s executive order to eliminate public employee unions<\/a> at the federal level. By ending taxpayer-funded union time, reclaiming office space, and retrieving IT equipment previously allocated to unions, the VA aims to enhance services for veterans.<\/p>\n

VA Secretary Doug Collins stated that staff will now focus more on veterans’ needs and national security rather than union demands. The agency cut its union bargaining unit employees from about 375,000 to 7,000, exempting public safety employee unions such as police and firefighters.<\/p>\n

The reclaimed resources include over 180,000 square feet of office space and more than 2,000 pieces of IT equipment. Ending union time on the clock is expected to save the most money, as nearly 2,000 employees had spent considerable work hours on union activities instead of serving veterans directly.<\/p>\n

Unions, notably the American Federation of government Employees (AFGE), are fighting back, claiming the VA’s actions violate federal guidance and their members’ rights. the AFGE condemned the move as retaliation against union members and indicated it may pursue legal challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n
