The city and county of Denver have laid off 169 employees as part of efforts to address a projected $200 million budget shortfall for 2026. This marks a continuation of budget-cutting measures that began about 18 months ago, including slowed hiring and freezing positions. The layoffs represent about 2% of Denver’s workforce, with a total of 928 positions reduced through layoffs, transfers, hiring freezes, and elimination of vacant jobs. These cuts aim to cover roughly half of the funding gap, with additional cost-saving strategies planned<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Denver’s mayor, Mike Johnston, acknowledged the contributions of the laid-off employees and praised city staff for working creatively to maintain services despite budget pressures. Key city services such as police patrols, trash collection, park and libary hours, and permitting commitments will remain unaffected. The city emphasized that, as personnel costs constitute nearly 70% of the general fund budget, reducing staff was necessary to stabilize finances. Various departments, including Transportation and Infrastructure, Parks and Recreation, Finance, and the Denver Public Library, experienced notable staff reductions.No further layoffs or furloughs are expected this year, with the official 2026 budget set to be presented in mid-September.
