International Paper announced the closure of three mills in southeast georgia, including the Savannah containerboard mill and packaging facility<\/a> as well as Riceboro’s containerboard mill and timber and lumber facility. This phased shutdown,starting next month,will result in the loss of 1,100 jobs. The company is redirecting efforts with a $250 million investment at a plant in Selma, Alabama. Local and state officials, including House Speaker Jon Burns and Savannah Mayor Van johnson, expressed concern about the economic impact on the region and the timber industry.Efforts are underway by local economic and labor organizations to support affected workers<\/a> and seek new employment opportunities.
