The Liberian-registered bulk carrier, 751 feet long and carrying coal, was leaving the harbor with 23 crew members and two pilots aboard when the blast happened; fortunately, no injuries were reported. Videos captured dramatic flames and smoke rising from the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the incident, and the Fort McHenry Federal Channel remained closed as officials assessed the situation. Witnesses nearby heard the explosion and saw the smoke plume, with some vessels rushing to assist. the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>As of Tuesday morning, the Fort McHenry Federal Channel remained closed.<\/p>\n<p>Port officials said the Coast Guard would decide when the channel can reopen.<\/p>\n<p>A source said the ship was able to sail unassisted to port to anchor.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Steinmetz and his son, Sam Steinmetz, were sailing in the Patapsco River when they heard the blast.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We were out sailing, and we heard a really loud explosion,&rdquo; Jay Steinmetz told CBS News. &ldquo;We turned around, and there was a 200-foot plume of smoke. We are like, &lsquo;Holy crap.&rsquo; Within two or five minutes, we hear, &lsquo;Mayday, mayday.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>His son added, &ldquo;We thought it was them doing demolition on the Key Bridge. We had just passed under the bridge, and the Sapphire ship had passed right by us.
