Osita Nwanevu, a contributing editor at The New republic and Roosevelt Institute fellow, wrote a book titled *The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding*, which argues for radical reforms to the American governmental system. Nwanevu criticizes elements such as the U.S. Senate and the Electoral College for being undemocratic, pointing out that small states hold disproportionate power compared to large states, which hinders Democrats’ ability to pass legislation.

He suggests potential solutions including adding new states like Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., to gain more Democratic portrayal, and even explores the possibility of abolishing the Senate altogether. Additionally, he supports reforms to replace the Electoral College with a <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/6-steps-the-democrats-will-take-to-fundamentally-alter-america-and-ensure-their-permanent-power/" title="6 Steps The ... It’s actually taking advantage of the equal state distribution.”

In particular, Nwanevu approves of making Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., into states, which would likely add four more Democratic lawmakers to the Senate.

When asked by Douthat if there should even be a Senate, Nwanevu implied that scrapping the upper chamber could be an option.

“Well, that’s another question. I think it’s worth exploring,” he answered. “It’s a kind of radical idea, but it’s an argument that you have to make on the basis of getting people to understand, not only that the system is not democratic, but what is the value of democracy, actually, to begin with?”

Nwanevu also called for other substantial changes to the government, including with how the President is chosen.

“We could start with the thing that I think most Americans think about when they think about the undemocratic nature of our system, a reform that most Americans have supported for a long time, which is dealing with the Electoral College,” he told Douthat.

“There’s a proposal on the table now, actually something that’s being acted upon in states across the country, to move to a national popular vote by interstate compact, without needing a constitutional amendment.”

The reason why these drastic changes are being offered right now is rather obvious.

Democrats were dealt a monumental loss in the election last year, and they have been licking their wounds ever since.

But rather than asking why the nation cannot stand their party, at least some Democrats are daydreaming about brazen power grabs.

The power is all they want. Osita Nwanevu, a contributing editor at The New Republic and Roosevelt Institute fellow, recently published a book titled *The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding*. In it, he argues that Democrats should consider fundamentally restructuring the government to better advance their policy goals.

In an interview with The New York Times, Nwanevu pointed out that the Senate-created by the founders to ensure equal state representation regardless of size-is a key reason Democrats struggle to gain power. He emphasized three essential features of any democracy, starting with political equality where all individuals have equal standing in collective decision-making.

Nwanevu highlighted how small states like Wyoming have equal Senate representation as large states like California, which disadvantages Democrats seeking federal authority. He noted that since the Senate influences judicial appointments, executive actions, and legislation approval through veto power, its current structure undermines true democratic principles despite claims otherwise.

While The New York Times’ headline was more provocative than his actual stance suggests, Nwanevu did propose ideas such as admitting new states-like Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.-to increase Democratic representation. When asked if abolishing the Senate altogether is worth considering, he acknowledged it as a radical but valid question tied to understanding what democracy truly means.

He also advocated reforming how presidents are elected by addressing issues with the Electoral College through interstate compacts aiming for a national popular vote without needing constitutional amendments.

These bold proposals come in response to Democrats’ significant losses in recent elections. Instead of reflecting on why voters reject them, some party members appear focused on aggressive strategies to regain power-often at odds with democratic values they claim to uphold. Ultimately though, their continued isolation stems from failing to win broad public support within America’s existing political framework-the very system they now seek to overhaul

[33651
61423,32557,3685,33263,36186
post-2475572","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-american-government","tag-book-review","tag-democrats","tag-new-york-times","tag-political-critique
["GET
