Cantrell, the first sitting mayor in the city&#8217;s history to face indictment, is charged with conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The charges stem from allegations that Cantrell and Vappie attempted to conceal an affair by exchanging and deleting over 15,000 WhatsApp messages. additionally, it is alleged that Cantrell met Vappie while he was supposedly on duty, and that trips they arranged were funded with taxpayer money. Cantrell has faced previous controversies, including a public petition for her recall due to concerns over rising crime in New Orleans. She has been mayor since 2018 and is term-limited in 2026. The charges in Friday&rsquo;s indictment of Cantrell and Vappie are based on allegations that the two attempted to hide an affair, including by exchanging over 15,000 messages on WhatsApp, conversations that they later deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Cantrell also met Vappie in an apartment, while Vappie claimed to be on duty.
