Thomas Massie (R-KY) is considered “extremely vulnerable” to a Republican primary challenge, according to internal GOP polling. The Kentucky congressman has faced backlash for opposing key elements of former president Donald Trump’s agenda, notably refusing to support Trump’s major “big, gorgeous bill” tax cuts due to concerns about increasing federal debt. massie’s favorability rating has dropped from 54% in June to 43%, with a re-elect score falling to 30%, signaling a weak position ahead of the 2026 GOP primary.

Trump has actively called for a primary challenger against Massie, sharing a poll that shows a majority of GOP primary voters favor candidates endorsed by Trump. Massie’s resistance to aligning fully with Trump has prompted criticism from MAGA-aligned groups; a pro-trump super PAC, Make america Great Again Inc., spent heavily on ads opposing his reelection, contributing to his declining support.

Beyond tax issues, Massie has drawn controversy within his party for questioning U.S.-Israel relations and criticizing Trump’s military actions toward Iran.He has also expressed concerns about alleged evidence being withheld in the Jeffrey Epstein case, drawing rebuke from house Speaker Mike Johnson. Massie distinguishes himself by attempting to avoid what he calls “Trump derangement syndrome,” seeking to focus on representing Kentucky’s interests rather than conforming strictly to Trump’s positions.

Massie’s campaign dismissed the poll’s accuracy, asserting that potential GOP challengers have declined to run against him and criticizing the motives and backgrounds of the MAGA super PAC leaders targeting him. Nonetheless, the poll highlights meaningful vulnerability for Massie within his own party as the next primary approaches.

Thomas Massie ‘extremely vulnerable’ to GOP primary challenge, poll shows

Rep.
