We&rsquo;re taking it back,&rdquo; Trump said in remarks from the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/08\/10\/trump-crime-data-federal-takeover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> Trump&rsquo;s conclusions into question, reporting that same day, &ldquo;Violent crime in D.C. has been on the decline since 2023, when a generational spike in killings rendered the nation&rsquo;s capital one of America&rsquo;s deadliest cities, plunging communities into grief and igniting a local political crisis that escalated to Congress.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The outlet then zoomed out to the national level, reporting, &ldquo;The decrease since then is part of a nationwide drop over the past two years that in 2024 brought homicide rates to their lowest level in decades. This year, homicides are down more than 30 percent in data that The Washington Post collected from more than 100 police departments in large U.S. cities. Reports of burglaries and robberies also dipped by double-digit percentages.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Looking specifically at D.C. shows crime is still alarmingly high.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the city had the <a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/which-cities-have-the-highest-murder-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hillary-clinton-spreads-misinfo-on-red-state-crime\/\" title=\"Hillary Clinton Spreads Misinfo on &quot;Red State ...&quot;\">fourth-highest homicide rate<\/a><\/a> in the nation behind Memphis, St. Louis, and Baltimore.<\/p>\n<p>Washington&rsquo;s rate was 40 per 100,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>By 2024, the rate fell to roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2025\/08\/trump-distorts-violent-crime-statistics-in-ordering-takeover-and-troops-to-d-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">28 per 100,000 residents<\/a>. But while lower than the year before, it still far outstripped the national average, and it came after years of increases.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in 2012, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/la-xpm-2013-jan-01-la-na-nn-washington-dc-2012-homicides-20130101-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">88 murders<\/a> versus <a href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/dailycrime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">187 in 2024<\/a>, and 101 so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the Metropolitan Police Department <a href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/dailycrime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that theft is little changed from the same point last year, with over 2,900 auto thefts and 3,700 thefts from vehicles.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">D.C.: &ldquo;When you hear from city leaders and others that crime is actually down, are you seeing that?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No. I&rsquo;m not seeing it.
