Trump reassured U.S. allies, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, that he intends to negotiate toughly and will impose “very severe consequences” on Russia if it does not agree to cease hostilities in Ukraine. Trump described a positive recent call with Zelensky and expressed hopes for speedy follow-up talks between Putin and Zelensky to achieve a ceasefire and progress toward peace.

European leaders, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, and the U.K.’s Keir Starmer, welcomed Trump’s emphasis on a ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine, while reiterating that territorial issues would not be negotiated via territorial swaps or granting Russia veto power over Ukraine’s future alliances. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte highlighted allied unity and placed the responsibility for peace talks on Putin.

Meanwhile, on the front lines, Ukraine continued attacking Russian oil refineries with drones, while Russian forces made some tactical advances in eastern Ukraine but suffered setbacks in the north, resulting in a high-profile command change. Analysts note that Russia remains firm on demanding Ukraine’s capitulation as a precondition for talks.

In domestic news, Trump is also pushing a crackdown on crime in Washington D.C., asserting federal control over local police and deploying federal agents and the National Guard amid protests and political opposition. Trump criticized official crime stats and promised to seek legislation to extend his authority beyond 30 days.

The article also notes upcoming international policy events and expert discussions related to defense and security, reflecting ongoing global and U.S. political-military dynamics.

‘There will be very severe consequences,’ Trump talks tough ahead of showdown with Putin

TRUMP: ‘VERY SEVERE CONSEQUENCES’: When he wasn’t announcing his personal picks for Kennedy Center honors (“I turned down plenty … of wokesters,” he said.), President Donald Trump spent most of his day Wednesday reassuring nervous allies that he had no plans to give away the store when he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow in Alaska.

First in a virtual meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and his key European allies, including Germany, the U.K., and France, and then in remarks at the Kennedy Center, Trump tried to tamp down fears that Putin was setting him up to be a patsy.

Recommended Stories

White House downplays prospects for Friday’s Alaska summit, calling the meeting with Putin ‘a listening exercise’ for Trump

Trump laying the groundwork to blame Zelensky for Putin’s intransigence, and walk away from peace process

As winds of war shift in Ukraine, Zelensky feels the cold draft of isolation

“We had a very good call.
