The inquiry focuses on claims that Schiff improperly listed more than one property as his primary residence to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eric-trump-distances-himself-from-fathers-financial-statements-in-new-york-testimony\/\" title=\"Eric ... testified in New ..., distancing himself from his father&#039;s financial statements.\">secure favorable loan terms<\/a> on his Potomac, Maryland home. Ed Martin, appointed by former Attorney General Pam Bondi as a special attorney for the case, met with officials from the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which initially referred the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Schiff&#8217;s lawyer,Preet Bharara,denounced Martin as a politically biased figure,noting Martin&#8217;s failed nomination for U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and his defense of January 6 defendants.Bharara described the investigation as a politicized effort to weaponize the justice system. Martin was replaced by Jeanine Pirro as U.S. Attorney nominee after lacking Senate support but has since taken on high-profile DOJ roles involving pardons and investigations into alleged politicization of the department.<\/p>\n<p>The probe into schiff parallels a similar investigation into new York Attorney General Letitia James, who is also accused of mortgage fraud. Both Schiff and James are known critics of former President trump, who has accused Schiff of wrongdoing and suggested jail time. The bias here is glaring. Mr. Martin&rsquo;s nomination to be U.S. Attorney of the District of Columbia was derailed not only by his partisanship and unfitness, but also by the hold Senator Schiff appropriately placed on the nomination. Mr. Martin is a January 6-defending lawyer who has repeatedly pursued baseless and politically-motivated investigations to fulfill demands to investigate and prosecute perceived enemies. Any supposed investigation led by him would be the very definition of weaponization of the justice process,&rdquo; said Preet Bharara, a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York who is now representing Schiff.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was initially selected by Trump to be his next U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, but after Republican support in the Senate appeared grim, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3405474\/trump-to-pull-nominee-ed-martin-dc-us-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"pulled\">pulled<\/a> his nomination.
