Prior to this, Boelter is accused of killing democratic Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband. The Hoffmans survived and are recovering after being hospitalized. Investigators discovered a confusing letter attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >boelter claiming secret military training<\/a> and alleging the shootings were meant to influence political positions, though his true motive remains unclear. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-unseals-indictment-against-head-of-gulf-cartel\/\" title=\"U.S. Unseals Indictment Against Head of Gulf Cartel\">faces state charges<\/a> of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, as well as federal stalking and firearms charges.<\/p>\n<p>Boelter is accused of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3448426\/minnesota-john-hoffman-shot-nine-times-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shooting<\/a>&nbsp;Democratic Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman nine times and his wife, Yvette, eight times after showing up at their door dressed as a police officer and wearing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/minnesota-shooter-claims-walz-asked-him-to-kill-klobuchar-in-letter\/\" title=\"Minnesota shooter claims Walz asked him to kill Klobuchar in letter\">realistic silicone mask<\/a> in the early hours of June 14. Boelter is also charged with assassinating Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, just before showing up at the Hoffmans&rsquo; house.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoffmans survived and were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Both have since been discharged from the hospital, with John Hoffman continuing his recovery at a rehabilitation center.<\/p>\n<p>Boelter&rsquo;s motivation remains unclear, but investigators found a 1 1\/2 page letter, described as rambling and difficult to read, that was ascribed to him. In it, Boelter said he was secretly trained by the U.S. military and asked to perform the shootings so Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) could run for Sen. Amy Klobuchar&rsquo;s (D-MN) seat, two sources familiar with the matter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/vance-boelter-letter-klobuchar-walz-mn-assassination\/601376682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em>Minnesota Star Tribune<\/em>. The note was reportedly addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Boelter spoke with the <em>New York Post<\/em> in an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/12\/world-news\/accused-killer-vance-boelter-hints-at-motive-in-post-jailhouse-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a>, his first since his arrest. If the gov ever [lets] it get out,&rdquo; Boelter said.<\/p>\n<p>Boelter was caught after a two-day search, the largest in Minnesota history.
